Ben Higgins4th December 2010Haha, well Monkey.. that's awesome that it's inspired you to work on that technique. Combining lots of downpicking with up strokes really allows you to attain higher speeds. No wonder people like Dave Mustaine use it ! :-)

Hi GMC'ers! Welcome to my lesson in the style of Judas Priest. I've chosen to capture the feel of two different eras: Killing Machine and Painkiller.
One of the main features in this lesson is the use of Diads. These are two note chords and are commonly used in metal instead of Triads, or three note power chords, as they are easier to shift between quickly.
There is also some fast tempo downpicking combined with upstrokes, which may be challenging if you're used to only downpicking. The key is to start slowly but don't concentrate too hard on your picking hand. Instead, try to 'feel' where the upstrokes should naturally occur and eventually your hand will get into the groove of doing this.
Techniques:
* Downpicking
* Upstrokes
* Slides
* Hammer-ons
* Pull-offs
* Bends
* Legato
