Kristofer Dahl13th September 2009This brings back quite some memories!
With only four chords this is a master composition - Kurt's sense of dynamics and melody was amazing.
Playing wise I think the initial strumming pattern may be tricky to get down for beginners - but if you get that down you should be able to nail the whole tune.
Thanks for a fantastic cover Gabriel!
Kuba Szafran13th September 2009That's my favourite Nirvana's song! Great job with covering that one Gabriel!

Gus15th September 2009Nice lesson!
Can you post your amp settings for this lesson? Or maybe POD X3 patch? =)
Gabriel Leopardi15th September 2009I didn't use the pod X3 for this lesson. I used my amp with this settings:
Presence 3
Bass: 5
Mid: 6
Treble:7
Gain: 7.5
In the intro/chorus I recorded another guitar with this sound and other two guitars with the addition of a overdrive/distortion pedal called Jekyll & Hide. All this guitars mixed in Nuendo with a bit of compression (Waves Rcomp), and a bit of EQ sound (I used Nuendo's EQ to attenuate low frequencies below 150 hz and added around 3 db at 1500 hz).
I also added chorus in the mix to the verse's clean guitars and the solo.
Toni Suominen16th September 2009Great lesson Gabriel!
Zsolt Galambos17th September 2009This is an awesome composition! I always admired Kurt Cobain for his songs.

Marcus Siepen26th September 2009What a killer song!!! I remember after the release of Nevermind they have been touring here in Germany and played in front of 30 people... half a year later they went through the roof and sold 15 million albums.

A classic Nirvana song.
Hi GMC! This is my first “famous song” lesson!
Nirvana is the band that put Seattle 90’s grunge scene in the mainstream thanks to Nevermind album’s first single called: “Smells like teen spirit”. This is the most famous Nirvana’s song and also one of the biggest 90’s rock hits. I still remember the first time that I saw the video of this song in MTV. I was blown away with this simple but very effective riff. I was starting to play the guitar in that time so this is one of the first songs that I learnt. That’s why I thought that it would be a really good idea to cover this lesson dedicated to all the beginners that like rock.
The song is in F minor. The chord progression is the same in all the song (excepting the bridge 2). The song evolves thanks to the different guitar arrangements, sounds and also thanks to the great Kurt Cobain’s vocal melodies. One of the most distinctive characteristics in Nirvana’s style was the guitar sound contrast between the verses (clean) and the choruses (overdriven).
SONG SECTIONS:
Intro: 4 bars (clean) + 8 bars (overdriven) + 4 bars (verse)
Verse: 8 bars
Bridge: 8 bars
Chorus: 12 bars
Bridge 2: 4 bars
Verse: 12 bars
Bridge: 8 bars
Chorus: 12 bars
Bridge 2: 4 bars
Solo: 16 bars
Verse: 12 bars
Bridge: 8 bars
Chorus: 20 bars
We’ll work guitar aspects like power chords, rhythm, alternate picking, vibrato, bending.
Ok guys! Let’s start to rock!
