Kristofer Dahl5th February 2015Thanks for the clarification Ben! I guess yet a trick would be to set the attack time of a compressor so that it just lets through the first transient (the pick attack) and then lowers the volume. This should allow for palm muted legato that sounds super staccato.

There's just so much good stuff to steal from here.
Question: Did you do any specific tweaks to your sound to get the picking dynamics needed for the first lick? With a distorted sound, sometimes pick dynamics are to flat/compressed for this to sound good.
Good question, Kris. Ideally, one would want to have a nice tube tone if they want to play that funky, staccato picking style. Something dry and not too distorted. The tone I used was a plugin so it is a compromise but I had to work harder on my right hand muting to keep the unused strings silent, especially on that opening lick !

Welcome to my new lesson in the style of Nuno Bettencourt!
"Nuno Duarte Gil Mendes Bettencourt (born September 20, 1966) is a Portuguese American guitarist, singer-songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his role as the lead guitarist of the Boston rock band Extreme" - Wikipedia
Extreme came to prominence in 1990 with their album 'Pornograffiti' showcasing Nuno's talents for writing incredibly catchy riffs, syncopated soloing and brilliant technique. However, their debut album 'Extreme' released in 1989 lent one of the tracks' Play With Me' to the movie Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. This was the fist time most people heard Nuno's insanely precise string skipping arpeggios and muting skills.
In this lesson we'll look at some of the latter aspects and some of the more pentatonic, funky based phrasing that he's known for. So you will be working on:
-Alternate picking
-String skipping
-Sweep picking
-Tapping
-Palm muting
-Timing
This lesson is a real challenge for any guitar player so I urge you to check this out and learn some new lick ideas!
