Thanks for the clarification Ben! I guess yet a trick would be to set the attack time of a compressor so that it just lets through the first transient (the pick attack) and then lowers the volume. This should allow for palm muted legato that sounds super staccato.

Question: Did you do any specific tweaks to your sound to get the picking dynamics needed for the first lick? With a distorted sound, sometimes pick dynamics are to flat/compressed for this to sound good.
