The riff, in its simplicity, has always been the elementary unit of rock! And the better the riff - the better the tune. That is why my quest for riffs is unending.
A riff does not need to be complex, but it needs to be able carry the weight of the song. It needs character, finesse & direction. It needs to handle scrutiny and abuse. And most importantly, it needs to catch the listener's ear without fatiguing it.
I hope this lesson will serve as an example on how to develop your own riffs - and build towards a climax.
