Hey GMC'ers! In this lesson we'll be seeing the tapping solo that appears in the minute 3:11 of the song “Building the church” on the record “Real Illusions: Reflections” by Steve Vai.
The solo is a 12 measures build up, with tapped chord shapes, and on each measure appears a new chord, with a few exceptions.
The first thing you have to learn is the pattern of the shapes. I strongly recommend that you listen to the first shape which is in the intro to the song. Once you've managed to get the pattern going, move on to the next shapes and try to connect them. I recommend having your left hand over the neck because that's the way Mr. Vai plays the solo, it's more confortable to mute the strings and you'll have more flexibility to play the pattern and move across the neck.
The shapes below correspond with the chords played in the lesson.
Technique:
Two Hand Tapping
