Kristofer Dahl7th July 2009Excellent lesson concept Lian!
If you are wondering which notes to choose when constructing a solo - I would definitely advise to check out this lesson and connect the backing chords (specificed below the tab of each part) with the lead which Lian is playing.
After a bit of analyzing you should realize that the the cool sounds comes from Lian playing "chord notes" while soloing.
Intermediate guitarists can take this concept one step further and apply it to solo improvisations - this will give you a great advantage over most other rock guitarists! (who are surprisingly often unaware of this super-effective soloing tool)
berko7th July 2009Yeah, chord tones is the ultimate tool to create some easy but very effective stuff! Awesome concept Lian! ![]()

Pedja Simovic8th July 2009Excellent lesson Lian, well presented!
Rolls9th July 2009Whoa.....I don't post feedback often but you have no idea what a breakthrough this was. I've been trying to work on this for some time and was getting pretty frustrated. Some of the theory is finally starting to sink in for me and I wrote my first non pentatonic minor solo LOL!! I loved the use of root, major/minor 3rds, and perfect 5ths following the chord progression. None of this really made sense until I started writing it down, so Kris was completely correct about the analyzing part.
I can honestly say this one lesson alone has been worth my membership fees since I joined quite awhile ago. Thanks dude....and thanks to the others who helped with the solo theory questions in the forums.
Piotr Kaczor11th July 2009Very helpful, Lian! Excellent lesson!

For all beginners who wants to create solos, this should be insightful!
Hi there, and welcome to a new lesson.
For all beginners who wants to create solos, this is a really cool lesson to learn.
We´ll use the same backing track with the following chords: Em-C-D-Bm
we´ll use the E minor scale exclusively.
so, with this lesson you´ll learn the basic concepts to create a solo.
Part 1:
We only use root notes over each chord of the backing track.
We´ll start with Em, so our first note will be a E note. then we play some notes til we reach the C major chord on our BT. so there we´ll play a C note. the same over D major and B minor.
Part 2:
Same Bt, but this time, in place of the roots notes, we´ll be playing 3rds notes.
so, over Em we´ll be playing the minor 3rd (G note) over C, major 3rd (E note) over D, major 3rd (F# note) over Bm, minor 3rd (D note).
Part 3:
Same Bt. this time in place of roots or 3rds, we´ll use 5th notes. so, over E minor, we´ll be playing B note, over C (G note) over D (A note) Bm (F# note)
Basically, what you are learning are 3 ways to compose a solo. They are not the only ones. There´re many ways to compose a solo. But these are the basics.
well. this easy lesson, should help you to understand some basic theory concept in times of create a solo from the notes, and not only by ear.
Take this lesson step by step and have fun.
Used scales: E minor
Meter: 4/4 –
Guitar Tune: Down 1/2 step
TEMPO: 120 bpm
As some of you know, I use a POD xt to rec all my lessons. you´ll find my presets on my board ;)
If you have any problems let me know.
Take care and see you all around.
