Zsolt Galambos19th July 2009Thank you!
The guitar is an ESP Horizon Fr II,
and for the I use a Line6 Toneport UX1.
Nighthawk119th July 2009Zsolt what is the key of that song actually? On the one hand I'd say it is B-Major due to the notes and the tonal center seems to be B also. But despite of this, I doesn't sound typical Ionian for me??
Zsolt Galambos19th July 2009The actual key is B mayor, of B Ionian. Satriani used the so called "Pitch Axis" theory here. This is a composing technique. The basic idea is that you can take any scale or mode based on the same tonal center, in this song he used B.
Here is what Satriani says about the "Pithc Axis" composing technique:
"It has an impressive name, but pitch axis theory need not be complicated or intimidating. This compositional method is grounded on a simple idea, so the level of complexity or sophistication depends purely on application. The principle is that any number of harmonic settings can be linked by the same tonal center. Say you're in C major ( C D E F G A B C ) for four bars and C minor ( C D Eb F G Ab Bb C ) for the next four. The major and minor keys share the same tonic, C, and this note provides a pivot point on which to shift harmonies. You could then take four bars in, say,
C Phrygian ( C Db Eb F G Ab Bb ) and then four in C Mixolydian ( C D E F G A Bb ). Now a series of four distinct harmonies are adjoined, all of them revolving around
the same key center, C. Thus, one pitch provides an axis point for the scales and chords of a variety of harmonic situations. "
Most of the Satriani songs are composed this way.
Capt.Z20th July 2009This is an awesome song. Satch is my hero ![]()

misterj21st August 2009Great Lesson! ive always wanted to learn this. btw, am i crazy, or is the shaker track set at a different speed than the bass in the 75 bpm backing track? the shaker seems too fast. i could be wrong...
Zsolt Galambos12th September 2009Yes,there was a strange problem with the backing, but it's fixed now!
misterj13th September 2009Thanks! sounds great now!!
Hammerhead14th September 2009Great song and great job! I like the dots... but seem to have a hard time following (remembering) them . Are you allowed to transcribe the notes? I read all the feedback and did not see anything about that. If you can, would you transcribe it for us? Thanks again, how about "For The Love of God" by Vai? Tha would be another great tune!
Thanxs!!!!!
Zsolt Galambos24th September 2009Unfortunately not, but I'd be glad to help you in following the onscreen tab.
And that little tune from Vai is also on my list of wannado-s ![]()
Hammerhead24th September 2009Zsolt,
Thanks... I'm refreshing my B major scale memory. I think that will help. If I hit a spot that really throws me off I'll holler ;>
I'm looking forward to more lessons from you! This is really great.
rico16th October 2009really very cool lesson, zsolt you're the satriani player one , chears man.
Love the song and you did a great job with it, but was turned off by the really awkward fretboard guide thing. It turned me away from continuing to learn the song. Any chance on the lesson being accompanied by tab?
Zsolt Galambos6th January 2010I'm really sad to hear that ![]()
This was my first attempt at moving dots here at GMC, so things are a bit harder to follow, although you have everything down slow as well.
Things got evolved since this lesson, now it's all spoken and it is easyer to follow.
Unfortunately we are not allowed to post tabs, backing tracks or whatsoever, what you have up on the site is all you can get at this time.
When I first started to learn things, I did not have nor tabs, nor PC, I had to learn everything by ear, just by listening to the track over-and-over again, pausing and rewinding...
You can still buy the original tab, although I play it a bit different. You can also search the web for some great tabs in GP, but I personally prefer tabs in Powertab.
Hey mate ..I cant see the guitar pro tabs..if anyone cant do some helps plz,
ziyuanchn@gmail.com
Zsolt Galambos26th April 2010Hi!
Unfortunately we are not allowed to post GP tabs for covers.
Cheers

This is an all-time classic by Joe Satriani.
Hi everyone!
This is a classic ballad written by Joe Satriani, from the album entitled "Surfing with the Alien, released in 1987. It is probably the best known composition by Satch.
The beauty of this ballad is that it has a main theme, repeating 3 times, the second an octave higher. It actually works as a chorus to the the song. The main theme is very ear friendly, and it instantly cathces the listener.
Next to the wonderful main theme, Satch greatly demonstrated his skills. He used beatuiful vibratos, phrasing, legato and two handed techniques, all in a melodic way.
In the days everyone wanted to learn this composition, and I am sure that every shredder already plays it as well.
For this composition I tuned my guitar to standard E ( E, A, D, G, B, E ), so everyone can learn it. My guitar will be tuned to E everytime when I deliver a new Sathc composition.
Have fun practicing.
-Zsolt
