      Major pentatonic with an added major 7th, just one note more to completely alter the sound of an old-good-sounding major pentatonic!

    Hi guys, today's lesson is on major pentatonic with an added major 7th, just one note more to completely alter the sound of an old-good-sounding major pentatonic!

    Major Pentatonic add maj7 - C major - 120bpm
    --------------------------------------------

    The musical study presents all five major pentatonic shapes, first without the added notes, and then with the major 7th. Practice it over the backing track provided is extremely important, study it with just a metronome doesn't will not make your ears learn the sound of this new six-notes scale.

    Technique Focus
    ---------------

    Try to memorize where the added note is located, if you know where the root notes are, half of the job is done, because the major 7th is an half step below.

    Theory Focus
    ------------

    Major pentatonic can be used over major, major6, major 7 major 7 #11 chords;

    But you will find best application over resolving dominant 7 chords.

    For example try to improvise over a Major key with major pentatonic and when a V7 chords came, add the major 7th ( 3rd of the V7 chords) to the pentatonic, to emphasize the need of resolve down a perfect fifth to the I chords.

    Pro Tips
    --------

    Actually a major pentatonic add major 7th, may be also viewed as a major scale with no 4th;
    the 4th is the most dissonant interval in the major scale, and is considered an avoid note, or a note to handle with care, and play it only as a passing tone.

    Removing it from the major scale leaves us with a safe note selection to improvise over Ionian and Lydian tonality.

    Have fun improvising...see you next lesson,

    Joe Kataldo.
