This song was released in September 1991 as the lead single from the group's fifth studio album Blood Sugar Sex Magic and it features a very unique and famous bass line!
Hello GMC!!
-In today's lesson we are going to cover the famous song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers called "Give It Away". The song was released in September 1991 as the lead single from the group's fifth studio album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Even though the song didn't feel "melodic enough" to radio station dj's of the time, it went on and achieved international fame for the Chili Peppers.
-The bass part is very unique and interesting. It is covering the large intervals on the bass, jumping up and down the octaves. In this lesson you are going to use lots of slides and dead notes in order to get the groove down. This is my interpretation of the song and this is how I play the song live. Flea may use different fingerings and licks especially when he is playing the song live and improvising.
-In the lesson we will cover the : intro, main riff, chorus and solo parts of the song with variations included. All notes played on bass will fit the A minor and E minor scales.
SONG STRUCTURE:
Intro(1 bar)
Main Riff(12 bars)
Chorus(4 bars)
Main Riff(12 bars)
Chorus(4 bars)
Solo(8 bars)
Main Riff(12 bars)
Solo(4 bars)
Main Riff(36 bars)
-Tempo: 92 bpm
-Tuning: standard
-Difficulty: intermediate
Equipment I used for getting this sound was: Am Fender Jazz Bass deluxe, equal mix of both pickups with added bass and middle on onboard preamp - then going to the nemesis (eden) amp with a 1x15" and flat eq there.
Feel free to ask me any questions in the lesson's feedback and in my instructor board at the forum.
Enjoy and I hope you'll have a lot of fun learning this song!
