I think that is not necessary at the begginings, but in the moment that you have an interesting level (when you know the main techniques and toques"), nails will bring you better sound and more capacity of expression on your instrument.

Yes, I use index finger. This is characteristic in flamenco technique. Also this specific technique (four note arpeggios with formula ppip is used a lot.) The reason is that thumb has very special sound
(like a pick, or like "plectro" in arabian instruments).

"What does the x mean?" X is "golpe", tap on the box of guitar. This is play with ring finger (some guitarists use middle finger)
