   70s Progressive & Symphonic Lesson Part I

Hello Everybody! Welcome to the first part of my 70s Progressive & Symphonic Lesson. This one is a good lesson to beginner guitar players and to give our first steps in the progressive rock style.

This lesson was inspired by bands like Kansas and Rush, but you can hear similar stuff in the Dream Theater’s songs or Liquid Tension’s songs, and many actual progressive rock groups. For this time, I suggest you listen to songs like "Carry On Wayward Son" of Kansas or "When The Water Breaks" of Liquid Tension (specially since the 05:41 min.).

For this first part I recorded only a rhythm riff because, in my opinion, first of all is very important learn a few things about this music style.

I think this kind of music style have two particular things you must know to introduce you in it. The first one is that the drums play an important paper; the different drum rhythms can create different variations on just one riff!

The second secret is work with only one riff, but making variations in it to obtain, with the drums, different sections and difference one to the other.

In this case, I work on two chords, E and A. Also, we can see the lesson in two big parts. The first one begins with a riff in 4/4. I make little variations in it and in the drum rhythm to get small different sections.

Then, I recorded the second part in 7/4 thinking in the principal riff, but in this case I make a big change in it to obtain another guitar section. And so, I do the same like in the first part. I make little variations in the riff and in the drum rhythm.

Make variations in the rhythm (for example 4/4 to 7/4) is always useful in this music style, and work with that is very interesting. Play solos in the different rhythms too! In the second part we are going to work in this way.

Ok, I hope you enjoy the first part of this lesson.

Tempo: 145 bpm

Bye!

Pablo.-

I absolutely love the kinds of riffs/rhythms that are in video 4-6, the odd time signatures make the notes seem so out of place and they come when you least expect them. So much tension! Dream Theater does a similar thing in Under A Glass Moon.
