Dream Theater is one of the most respected metal progressive bands. In this lesson we'll study a rythm track inspired by John Pettrucci's guitar work. This lessons is designed for 7 string guitars. Although it is possible to develop these ideas on a standard 6 string guitar, the 7 string gives this style of rythm an aggressiveness that can be lost on a standard guitar.

Use these as ideas and starting point to new song ideas.

Make sure to warm up before working on this lesson as these riffs are very demanding on the left hand.

Hope you enjoy this lesson, have a good practice!

Sweet! Thats a fantastic tone you have there David. Unfortunatly my budget doesnt allow for a 7-string any time soon. I'll try to adapt some of the ideas to my 6 string though.

That's one cool 7-string! It could use some headstock work but the body looks great - IMO! smile.gif There are so many different guitar designs, each one of them is cool on it's own!!! smile.gif

Keep 7-stringing David! wink.gif

Thanks guys.
This one is a very cheap instrument I got on Ebay. Only paid 100 dollars for it...
It's a Galveston. Not great but good enough for recording. :-)

You guys should tune down to B-E-A-D-G-B. You can practice that way and somewhat get the tone.

I'm still learning the 6 string so I'll wait a few more years until I buy a 7 string. Sounds great though.

''I'm still learning the 6 string so I'll wait a few more years until I buy a 7 string. Sounds great though. '' That's a bad way of thinking. A 7 string is just a 6 with an extra string! That one string alone opens up many arpeggio/chord/riff possibilities. I think every guitar player should own a 7.
