Hello everyone at guitarmasterclass.net. My name is Daniel Robinson welcome to my first online video lesson.

When i was originally deciding on a topic for my first lesson i had thought to do a more advanced lesson. You know the typical i am new let me dazzle you lol. After reading through the forums for awhile it occurred to me that some of you newer to playing guitar needed something more your speed. I know sometimes trying to tackle something really difficult can be frustrating. Someone in one of those posts i read mentioned George Lynch and that they would like an "in the style of" lesson. So i decided to give it a shot.

George Lynch is one of the most instantly recognizable guitar players when you hear him. His tone and phrasing are very unique. Mr. Scary as he is often referred to has a propensity for using the diminished 5th (or flat 5th) in almost every song he has written. The diminished 5th ...the tritone...(sometimes referred to as the devils note) has an ominous sound when used in the context that George uses it. Just know that the tritone is the halfway point between two octaves.

For the solo purposes in this lesson piece we are going to be using the E Phrygian scale. The phrygian scale has a flat 2nd flat 3rd flat 6th and flat 7th. And in this piece we are also making heavy use of the tritone i.e. flat 5th. Sometimes its an augmented 4th depending on your chord progression. In our case though its a diminshed or flat 5th.

In E phrygian scale the flat 5th is B flat. And i have tried to incorporate it as much as i could in this piece.

In order to get your tone to sound more like George you have to be really aggressive with your picking and vibrato. Other players like Andy Timmons for example have a really light picking style George is very aggressive he likes to pinch the string almost to the point of pinch harmonics but not quite.

His style contains alot of nuiances that are almost impossible to TAB the TAB i have included in the GP file as well as the hand written just shows the notes and the general rhythm of those notes. Pay careful attention to the delivery of the notes.

Another thing about George is that he isnt that big on theme building. Other players like Joe Satriani build intricate themes in a well placed manner. George's playing is more like falling down the stairs and landing on your feet. He plays whatever strikes him moment to moment. Its one of the other reasons his style is so unqiue.

I really hope you enjoy this lesson and hope to make more Beginner/Intermediate "in the style of" lessons in the future.

I have included 1 backing track at 100BPM its not zippin along so i didnt see a need for a slower one.

I have also included a GP file for you.

I think this is really cool sounding while still fairly "doable" - I really like how you connect this topic with forum discussions you have read. I think this adds yet a community dimension to our lessons! biggrin.gif

Great lesson Daniel. Another Lynch fan here and find his tone hard to manage. Great explanation!
Definitely have to dig when playing Lynch style.

Question. How did he manage to carry the rhythm and create such awesome solos (live) at the same time? Sound engineers running a board?

Well of course some of the studio tracks he played the rhythm parts. But live for the most part George would just play lead with no rhythm section. Their are a few times though when Don Dokken would play the rhythm parts doing the solo. Not often but when needed.

Jeff Pilson was the man filling the gap for the most part, he is an awesome bass player.

Daniel

P.S. another staple of George's sound is a subtle Flanger, he doesnt use a fast moving flange..its low and has a long long swell

Lester check out some Dokken solos, or Lynch Mob , Daniel nails the style in a much appreciated lesson format of awesome camera views of right and left hand, both slow and fast speeds. Check out Lynch on Mr Scary. His style along with the rest of Dokken made for many memorable moments in the 80's for me. The style was way over the top back then, but in some ways you might have to be a bit older to have appreciated those times . Great lesson thanks Daniel

Thanks Toofister, and Lester if you need help with any of it let me know.

As far as a good song, he is most known for "Mr. Scary but here is a link for a less known tune off his Instrumental CD Sacred groove.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVj7wFTGkSA

Some of his most memorable licks on that album if you can get your hands on it.

Thanks Daniel for this link, I thought the artwork was well done. Shortly after I recognized it as "I will remember" my favorite off Sacred Groove. I had totally forgot about that recording, and "Tierra del Fuego" the end track I really thought is worth a listen. Thanks again:)

Another thing i thought i would mention even though this lesson has fallen off the radar for the most part,

Lynch uses the side of his pick to pick with instead of the point, its another part of his sound. I have tried to play with the side of the pick takes some getting used to. Have to be alot more precise with your picking to avoid unwanted string noise.

Daniel
