Kristofer Dahl24th February 2008Love it!
When Marcus and I met and he showed me these riffs - the power of the Drop D tuning really struck me. Also, I am determined to get up to tempo with my downstrokes (I need that in order to play the backing riffs for Marcus' solo - the last riff showed here).
Most riffs in this song are fairly doable though - once again the Drop D tuning really facilitates things!
Thanks for the awesome lesson Marcus! ![]()
DeepRoots24th February 2008great one- thats some sweet riffage!

Marcus Lavendell24th February 2008Thanks guys!
Yes, the drop-D tuning is really awesome! This song would be almost impossible to play with standard tuning (at least the intro)
seagull24th February 2008Finally! A "new" lesson from you.
These riffs are awesome, and the second I had the solo down, I listened and learned the riffs. Figured it was to fast to play without drop-D, and I guess I was right.
They are no short of awesome, so is your distortiony-crunch!
Muris Varajic24th February 2008That's POWER!!! ![]()

Kristofer Dahl25th February 2008Thanks Juan for your kind words!
Marcus - the way you create a cool riff around the basic chord progression of the chorus is just amazing - and the added rhythmic palm mutes gives such a cool contrast.
No how I am ever going to sing and play that at the same time...I don't know! ![]()
Outlaw211226th February 2008Bad ass riffs.. just in my style
Erik Johnson26th February 2008Oh my gosh! I was exactly right! I tabbed out this song by ear because I loved it and the solo so much.
Thank you Marcus and thank you Kris! I love it! ![]()
Marcus Lavendell26th February 2008That's great! Congrats!
I recommend everyone to do the same; Try to learn the songs by ear at first. Only look at the tabs when you must! ![]()
seagull26th February 2008@Kristofer: You probably already know this, but:
The keyword is "tap your foot". I started playing guitar while singing to what I played, and tapping a foot with the beat is essential. Also, as Marcus always says in his lessons "Learn the riff by muscle memory, so that you don't have to think about it." Also, learn the lyrics inside out, and try not to push/strain your throat/chest too much when doing the vocal rasps, it can really bring your focus away from the guitar - which is bad, cuz they have to be synchronized.
Kristofer Dahl26th February 2008Thanks for the advice Seagull - I need it!
I keep working on it.
Carlos Carrillo26th February 2008hey marcus!!!cool lesson!!!!thanks
Martin la guitarra26th February 2008haha this just so awesome! C'mon, not even the greatest bands make such good songs like this one, keep up with the good work and you'll get to the top!
Marcus Lavendell27th February 2008Wow! Thanks for your kind words Martin! ![]()
Pitch_Black29th February 2008This totally one of favs, great job Marcus!
seagull3rd March 2008Still lovin this Marcus, but is it possible to get the 90 bpm backing without the guitar on it?
Marcus Lavendell3rd March 2008Thanks Pitch_Black and seagull
well, I mixed the backing guitars very low and it's meant as a "guide".
Is it really that disturbing? If it is, I'm sure I can make another version ![]()
seagull3rd March 2008Hehe, I figured there was some reason you'd put them there. It's just that I record lessons sometimes using a standard computer mic., but I can't hear what I am playing on the mix when your kickass guitar is in the background. ![]()
seagull3rd March 2008However, it would be cool to have full speed version without the rhythm guitar WITH the solo guitar. Possible? ![]()
Marcus Lavendell3rd March 2008Oh ok!
Sure I'll fix a backing like that!
Marcus Lavendell3rd March 2008@seagull
Do you still want the vocals in there, or should I leave them out?
seagull3rd March 2008Sure! Would be cool! Thanks a bunch ![]()
Marcus Lavendell3rd March 2008No problem! I'll fix it tomorrow ![]()
seagull4th March 2008Great man, thanks!
seagull5th March 2008Hows the track coming? ![]()
Marcus Lavendell5th March 2008It's on its way! I'm having some problems uploading it, but hopefully it will be fixed soon ![]()
seagull6th March 2008Oh okay, but if you want you can just add me on msn and send it there?
seagull25th March 2008Almost can't wait anymore Marcus...![]()
AlexJohnston20th April 2008You're a great guitarist throughout!! You're lessons are just inspirational!
Jackson6th August 2008I'm so gonna have that song on my iPod!
IT'S SO AWESOME!!!
Jesse7th November 2008OMG.... this beats some of the Iron maiden songs n stuff. REALLY GREAT!!!!!!!!!! After the first 2 patterns I felt like doing a high-pitched scream ala iron maiden
Alexiaden9330th April 2009This sounds a bit like a mix of Iron Maiden and Metallica in my opinion ! I didn't know rhythm guitar could get this cool ! You rock ! ![]()
