Kai Muehlenbruch - Three is a Charm
Hello Folks! In this Lesson number "3" is the thing! Not only there is a german saying: "Aller guten Dinge sind drei" (three is a charm) and it is my 3rd lesson, NO!!! This is also to be played over a tripletbeat!
I just love to use triplets/6-tuplets and so on, and here you are one way, how to have some fun also, while practising them.
This time its just you, your guitar and the playalong. No second Rythmguitar, but a programed bass. You might notice, harmonies or second voices will be played by a violin/bagpipe sample from the Keyboard I arranged and played for you. You will have to master a 183BPM timesignature, but don´t you worry. Therefore I prepared "3" playalongs.
The whole thing is divided into 7 pieces. Note, that 1 and 7 are the same except one note in the end.
Thanks for your attention!
Have fun mates,
Kai

| Part 1 and 7.
This is like a bit like the "maintheme" I find. You might recognize it moves through the little composition I did here. Repeating parts of it here and there. The stops and palmmutings might become a bit tricky. What we do in that run, by adding little "sweeps" (in this example on the g and e string; within one motion / upstroke) when changing the strings, is called "economy picking", by the way.
Once again practise slowly, and a metronome can be useful to count the beat ;) |

| Part 2
This is the Finntrollpart, because of it sounds a bit like a moving troll or so.Actually, a quite fast moving troll perhaps. Well, I put a lot of force into the downstrokes each time I hit the low E and the powerchords with low 5th, even though they are mutet. This is how it becomes quite a brutal sounding riff, but on the same hand quite funny,I think. If you take away the playback the riff is quite heavy...don´t you think?
In the ending theres a quite far stretch between the 5th and the 9th fret on the d string. So before you get into this make sure you can do that without craping. |

| Part 3
This looks quite easy and familar right? But still I find, if you are into metal, there is a couple ot things that are ment to be practised over and over again. The chordprogression behind this is not that hard to understand, but since this is another Rythmlesson, I think mastering this kind of singlenote lines with stops is sometimes hard enough to get done perfectly.
Each time you play a powerchord, you don´t let it ring out. You have to use your right hand to palmmute over and over again, before the next triplets appear. |

| Part 4
Palmmuted all the way. Each time a phrase is completed I let my right hand rest for a little so the other strings get damped also.
I just loved this rythm. So I felt like just changing it like this in the second half of what we could call the chorus of the composition.
There is a couple of cool metal bands out there doing similar stuff. One besides others coming straight to my mind is Iced Earth. So if you are into those riffs, this here might be helpfull. |

| Part 5
Here we have some pulloffs right in the beging. Same rules as in the other riffs, each time the triplets stop the right hand rests on the strings. But also like Part in 2, each time we play the low E we add a certain punch into it. |

| Part 6
Every low E is downstroke action. With our special punch. Now if you play the hammerings, try to find a way how to hit the note with the right hand that is comfortable to you. I change from time to time. Sometimes I just can´t decide if I wanna do up or downstroke. What I want to say is, you don´t have to do it like me exactly, but keep in mind you do a pinch-harmonic before you play those pull-off´s and try to get the notes out all in the exact same way.
Also before you repeat the riff, you are playing open strings for a short time. I find that quite hard on the lower strings, since I don´t use regular strings. Also this is, what you might need to practise if you want to play Death/Blackmetal stuff.
The second time you end a phrase, it becomes the octave of the maintheme again, and then we move into Part 7 which ends with a g note (12. fret on the g- string), we add some vibrato and slide downward on the g string.
I leave it up to you how long you want to hold the last note ;) |
