Underworld of Fantasy

Hello GMC! Today I recorded is a modern metal (New metal?) rhythm lesson inspired in bands like A perfect Circle, Tool, 30 seconds to mars, and many others. This is a 6/8 tune that combines different rhythms, riffs and progressions that are very used in today's alternative rock/metal. I think that this kind of bands have a fresh guitar work that is a must for every electric guitar player.

In this lesson we will use different techniques like alternate picking, palm muting, legato and vibrato.

The tune is in D minor but the first riff has been composed using D Phrygian Major Scale. This scale is the Phrygian mode with the third major instead of minor. We will also talk about some extended chords like Major Sixth add9 and minor ninth. And once again we will use power chords and octave chords.

Tempo: 105 bpm.

Bye.-

Gabriel.

Pd: If you liked this lesson you should check these albums. Mer de noms (A Perfect Circle), Lateralus (Tool), A beautiful lie (30 seconds to mars)

Awesome riffs, but i dont really see this as modern metal. Modern metal is more like Bullet For My Valentine, A7x, and Trivium. And yep, the sound is arabic...

Hey! Thanks for the comments! I'll work in that kind of more new emo punk metal stuff too (like my bloody valentine, they are very influenced by the old metal bands like Maiden and Metallica). I don't know trivium. Tool and APC are more experimental and use other kind of scales and rhymths. The metal music is more than 30 years old so something that happened 5 years ago is modern for me!... wink.gif

Gabe, I take offense to the word "Modern", as if the stuff from I like from the 70's and 80's is old time rock and roll or something. wink.gif

Great lesson.
In frame #4 (A#5) are you playing the A string with your index, and the G string, with your ring finger? Are you muting the D string? I'm having a really hard time when playing two notes togeter...that are not right below or above each other? What is this called that you are playing in the example?
THANKS

I have a question.

Do we really have to play the X notes in the tab? (cause i cant hear you playing it and when i play them i get a pluck sound. And not to sound like *&@% but Bullet for My Valentine isint emo, theyre post hardcore. The reason i pointed that out cause when people hear the word emo they jump at your throat.

p.s: I listen to emo (only listen so dont flame up)

Are you really looking into emo metal? Frikkin awesome!!! Ill be waiting till then, really cant wait.

Hi Jammer! It isn't so necesary, but I play it.. It makes me keep the groove. It should sound very quiet.
I have seen Bullet at Brixton DVD they rock! smile.gif I don't care what style they play... they are a very good band and sound so fresh. My next lesson is a dropped D and then I'll work in some dropped C (post hardcore) stuff too biggrin.gif ...

My frist lesson on GMC and I absolutely love it. It makes me want to do nothing else any more apart from playing guitar.

Great lesson, Gabriel - I like the different angles, left and right hand close-ups, and of course the track which is plain fun to play.

I'll be seeing you for lesson 2 ! smile.gif
