Hi all :) With this lesson we will be looking at usages of the always cool Dropped-D tuning, working on downstroke stability, alternate- and downstroke-picking switching and practicing a bit more speedy rhythm-playing.

The lesson itself consists of a fairly fast-paced piece with alot of variation, some progressive elements, and a bit trickier run at the end.
I have tried to construct the lesson from a full-song perspective using the various parts (minus a solo and lenghty verses) you might encounter in a metal-song of this type (Progressive/melodeath), and it's mostly centered around the D Aeolian scale.

_______________

Tempo: 172 BPM
Tuning: Dropped D
Scale: D Aeolian
Time Sig: 4/4

As usual, i have included 4 backingtracks and a Guitar-Pro file.
Enjoy :) And dont hesistate to send me a message if you have any questions.

Hey Trond, I'm having trouble with holding my pick facing towards the ground and getting the quick alternative picking. My downstrokes are working but my upstrokes are getting caught up on the string. For playing the bass notes is it a bad idea for me to make a habit out of just using the flat pick technique where it's not at an angle cause that is seems to work right now.. And also what thickness pick do you use? I'm switching between two picks, a medium and a .46mm. Do you think those are too light for this type of music?

and one more question. Sorry for all the text..
how do you count the
[----------------3-]
[----------------5-]
[0-0-0--0--0--0----]

at the intro for example. Is it right to count "tri-p-let, 1, and, 2, and"?

NoPayneNoGain: Picking angles are very individual i think. I prefer an angle, but i know many that use flat picking.
Go for what works best.

I think .46 is a bit too light for metal. Especially when your trying faster alternate picking.
I usually use Jazz II picks (1.18mm i think), just right for me.

And yes, you can count it like that. But they arent technially triplet notes. The 3 first are 32 notes and the rest of the open string notes are 16th notes.
