Hey! This is my first progressive metal lesson in the style of Symphony X and Dream Theater. Let’s make a bit of history. The first progressive metal bands that I know were Queensryche and Fates Warning in the end of 80’s. If you like this style you should listen to Perfect Symetry (Fates Warning) and Operation Mindcrime (Queensryche). Then it appeared Dream Theater with Images and Words album and they became the most popular of them. The best way to learn and understand a style of music is listening to it’s roots. I could say that the main roots of this style are the progressive rock bands (Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Rush, etc) and the heavy metal bands (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, etc…) Nowadays there are hundreds of progressive metalbands (like my band: www.purevolume.com/digitalfear) and I could say that Symphony X is one of the best with obviously Dream Theater that are the kings. Ok guys, I want you to tell me your favourite prog band in the comments!

The exercise is a difficult rhythm part in different meters. The first section is very in the style of Symphony X and the second section remembers me to Dream Theater’s first album.

The idea here is that you get inspired with this lesson to create your own progressive metal riffs and then songs.

Tempo: 160 bpm
