Welcome to my new Alternate Picking lesson! Today we'll work on some really fast stuff using 6ths (6-tuplets)and only a C-Major scale. This lesson also includes a way of breaking out of borring "up-down" scale runs and some Rusty Cooley style runs. I'm sure after learning this one up the speed you'll improve a bunch in your picking and left hand work. There is also some talking about accentuating notes in playing. See ya all inside!

I love this. Ive been doing alternate picking for around 5 months ( intensely ) and this is just what I needed. I was sad when I though you were going to stop at just 3 alternate picking lessons. ;( , tongue.gif.

About the accents . Is it basically just making the first not on each string stand out to make a like a unique flow to the sequence ? And what is the result of not using accents in runs like this?
Sloppier Playing ?

- Thanks, John

Eat-Sleep-andJam:

Accent is pointing out a note - basically - playing slightly stronger/louder than the others. In practicing it gives you more control but later when you get it to fast speeds you reduce it to minimum and it becomes just as other notes. It's very useful for practicing and learning to use sequences, practicing with metronome AND it really helps in breaking the licks apart when you have loads of notes!

When you speed it up - it ALMOST disappears.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Pavel,

I hear an echo on some of the videos. Is there an echo in the room or are you using a delay? Does the delay give you a fuller sound? I'm wondering if I should practice with delay (if it is delay), or just clean?

Thanks,
Boris

I have a slight delay and also my room is not perfectly isolated so i get a re-verb from the camera mic.

You can always use a bit of delay to make the sound fuller. I use to make sound better! smile.gif But it doesn't mean you have to crank delay to 10 biggrin.gif

Pavel,

Btw, these are my favorite exercises. I would say that about 80% of my practice session is dedicated to Alternate Picking 1, 2, and 3 (and no, I don't get bored). I have been doing it for about two months, two hours a day (7 days a week). I feel like I progress in spurts. I wont see any improvement for a week or so, and then bang, I see improvement. Is that normal? Also, my descending speed/control is much better then my ascending. Do you know why thats so? Keep these exercises coming, I love em.

Thanks,
Boris

Yes, progress like that is normal. And also the ascending runs are more difficult for me than descending. So you are not alone in the boat! smile.gif

Keep practicing and you'll improve a bunch!! smile.gif

Amazing! Just what I need. I've been practicing your other alternate picking lessons religiously, and I am stoked with how much I'm improving! Can't wait to start this one so that I can push my picking even further.

Thanks Pavel smile.gif

Pavel,

I love my 7 string Universe. It is my primary guitar. I play it all the time. I got to thinking about the Rusty Cooley ending, and I wanted to extended it to all 7 strings. This is what I came up with:

I wanted to end it on a tonic, and I also like the exaggerated vibrato. What do you think?

Thanks,

Well if it sound ok than enjoy it because i don't have a 7-string guitar and it's kinda hard to keep track of the last string! Well, anyway - if you like it - do it! You can even try doing same kind of run using minor scale - just for practice. I showed you one of many ways to play around the scale so now you can just work on it using any scale! smile.gif

Pavel,

Its those damn proportionally spaced fonts. Screwed up everything. Basically I just extended the same sequence you used (three shifts, and up...) all the way through the seventh string in C major. The run wound up covering 17 frets (22 - 5) biggrin.gif. I have been reading about and practicing scale sequences for a while now, and I'm starting to get the picture. While its definitely NOT music, it helps me work on the chops, which is what I so desperately need right now. Music will come later.

Thanks for all your help and advice,
Boris

Well when you get it down you'll be able to do music with it! It will just allow you to freely improvise and think of new runs all over the neck! smile.gif

Good job on trying to extend it on 7th string! Keep it up!

This is just so great. I find the hardest part of alternate picking , is not picking really fast, but changing strings and picking fast at the same time.

Well Pavel,

I had put off learning this one for time to spend on other lessons, but I have to say this puppy is and is going the help a lot. I can not believe how well I can play it and it is restarting the desire that had tapered off a bit. Thanks for your work.

And why not do a encore with a lesson 5 smile.gif

Im stuck on vid one cause the higher frets are way too small for me to play fast (i keep geeting muted notes).
