Muris Varajic7th December 2008You're very welcome. ![]()
kevvyg26th March 2009Great lesson Muris!
Don't want to bog you down in theory, but you're using some unusual chords I haven't come across before. Just wondered how they fit in with A minor, an dhow the 'extra' notes from the chords 'work' with the melody. Perhaps it's just a 'nice' chord progression that you picked a few notes out of to create the melody...?
This will keep me going for a while...!
Kevin
kevvyg26th March 2009Sorry Muris, I left off my 'for example'!
For example, how does the 'C' (2nd string 13 fret, Bar 1), fit in with the E7+9? When I see a note in the melody that's not in the accompanying chord, it throws me. I know E7+9 is E-G#-B-D-G, and you're not playing the 5th, but what's the reason for the C? It shouldn't fit, but it does!! Help!!
Kevin
Muris Varajic27th March 2009Hi Kevin.
7+9 type of chord is very often in blues progression,
specially in minor keys as 5th degree chord or dominant chord.
Note C isn't involved in this chord as you have noticed
but blues players don't follow progression all the time
as jazz players do per example, note C in just a note
from Am pentatonic scale, they do pentatonic a lot.
On the other hand you can look at this C note as B#
and then you get kind of +5 feel, sweet jazzy sounding note. ![]()
kevvyg27th March 2009Thanks Muris!
I try these chords out!
I think I'll learn the track and worry about the theory later. I guess the rule of thumb is to be aware of the theory, but don't let it get in the way! I suppose if a note sounds good, it doesn't really matter if it's in the scale or not!
Kevin
Muris Varajic27th March 2009
kevvyg31st March 2009Can I just ask....I'm not sure what you mean by +5. As the key is Amin, would 'C' (or B#), not be the minor 3rd (or augmented 2nd)? I assume +5 is augmented 5th, which should be E# (or F).
Thanks!
Kevin
ps sorry if I'm being a bit dim...!
Muris Varajic1st April 2009I was talking about E aug or E+5, not A aug,
5th is B and +5 is B# or C.
I said 5th degree in key,
this is Am key and 5th degree is E. ![]()
kevvyg2nd April 2009Thanks for clearing that up Muris - time to practice I think!
KG
Muris Varajic2nd April 2009You've got it! ![]()
