Hi everyone! In this lesson, we will be examining a solo from a song of mine called “Haste”. This solo utilizes some cool legato, sweeping and tapping.
The backing chord progression is: D# A# F D
The primary scale being used is A Ionian, or A Major. There are a few instances when the flatted 6th is also played.
As you learn this, make sure you make your own variations of the techniques and ideas you see here. You’ll get so much more out of the guitar if you learn and then expand on what you learned.
This section has plenty of legato (hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides).
At the very end of this riff, notice how the last few notes are played after these weird slides? What I’m doing there is delaying the note by doing a downward slide right before actually playing the note. The end result sounds like a whiny guitar effect, and it can be very tasteful sounding if used appropriately.
This part isn’t too difficult. Just make sure that when you slide for far distances, that your eyes are looking at the fret you need to slide to. With guitar in general, it’s always good to be thinking and looking ahead.
Here’s a short little sweep that I like to use a lot. The notes are based off of the 4th pentatonic mode. Make sure all the notes are even and equal in volume.
Also, make sure the bend at the end is correct in pitch. It should raise the note by one whole step.

Lastly, we get to the fun part! Because the fun parts are always the hardest parts right? :)
Best advice here is to play it very slowly. We¡¦re using a combination of sweeping and tapping here. Make sure that you sweep through the strings properly before your tapping finger taps. If you try to tap too soon, your sweeping will sound messy.
It's very easy to play sloppy with these kind of phrases, so practice slowly and gradually build up speed.
Awesome!!
Great solo, i just hope sometime you do a lesson for Pending Closure, that song kicked ass, i know its on a seven string, but ill tune to B Standard for that!
MisterJ, it's a Petrucci OLP guitar. Awesome guitar! Especially for the cheap price.
XxLeviathanxX, bummer dude! haha are you okay? I should have put a little disclaimer at the bottom saying I'm not responsible for any physical damage that might result when learning this solo. I've gotten stabbed plenty of times. Not fun!
yea this solo was in my head a few days ago and I couldn't remember what it was but it was driving me crazy so I went on here and looked through everything to find it, thats how addicting it is
