Hi!Today’s lesson is a guitar solo over a 7/4 riff in the style of John Petrucci, Steve Morse and Zakk Wylde. I have recorded this solo for my side project called Digital Fear Experiment (www.purevolume.com/digitalfear).

It is a very interesting exercise that includes alternate picking, legato and bending.

The backing track is a Gm based riff. We will use two different scales in the solo. First we will play a G Dorian scale and then G Pentatonic minor scale with chromatics as passing notes.

I recorded 4 backing tracks at different tempos (100 bps, 130 bps, 150 bps and 180 bps) for you to practice the licks at different speeds. You can also practice to a 7/4 metronome track to improvise and create your own 7/4 riffs. (editorial note: Don't miss Andrew Cockburn's theory lessons serie on note values and time signatures!)

If it’s necessary practice every lick at slow tempo for days.

I hope you will enjoy it!

Man, I can really feel the petrucci vibes coming from this one. Apart from sounding verry cool, This lesson will without a doubt give some good ideas to people how to create there own riff's in this style. This lesson inspires me, wich for me is the most inportant

Keep up the good work, Great lesson!

Thank you! I feel very happy if my music inspires more music! and I also think that inspirations is the most important thing for a lesson.

:S i have mixxed feelings about it lol i mean its definetly good! but the last lick of it is 17-23 is clearly zakk but and petrucci only gets 1 second sad.gif i'm wondering if you could do a lesson a little more simalar to the solo in the glass prison by dream theater the 3 string sweeping petrucci does there is harder then most 6 string stuff lol and i've found it verrrrrrry hard to learn maybe a lesson would help;)?

Hi Proof! Thank you for your suggestions! I understand what you are saying.
Check Petrucci solo album or some Falling into infinity solos! He plays this kind of stuff in those albums.

Petrucci is a great guitarist and I should record lot of lessons to explore all his technique. I could do new lessons about it.

Eat-Sleep-andJam: The most important thing is to mute the strings that you are not playing with your right hand.
