Edit
RIP Dime15th January 2007Awesome!! Helped alot!
Great. !
Love sweep picking ! ![]()
very nice, but only got 22 frets on my guitar ![]()
Kristofer Dahl15th January 2007Norven: You can play on the 22th fret instead - making it a minor7 arpeggio ( I don't have 24 frets either). Or you could just move everything down two frets.
Pavel: Awesome - I like how you gradually speed it up in part 3 - one can hear your playing remains clean inspite of the speed.
I started practicing sweeping seriously a couple of months ago - so just like everybody else I would be curious to know...
How long have you been practcing sweeping (and how many hours per day) - when did you start noticing progress?
/Kris
Pavel15th January 2007First of all: sorry for the 24th fret stuff but i am addicted to it hehe! And as Kris said: you can just start playing the whole lick in D-minor and your 22 frets would be just enough!
I started to practice sweeps 2 years ago, at least 3 hours a day, and now i am practicing it more and more hours because it is a very difficult technique - you'll see what i am talking about in 5-string sweeping shapes, not to mention 6-string shapes - nightmare! And ofcourse i want to make them fast as hell but still to remain clean in playing. So it requires lots of hours a day.
A progress - it's coming very slowly so i really can't tell you - took some time to feel it. And you should practice sweeps when you are really warmed up with other excercises.
Pavel
Kristofer Dahl15th January 2007So what is you maximum bpm for the three string arpeggio - (and for the five string) stuff?
What's your goal bpm? (If you have one)
Pavel15th January 2007For 3-strings - 120 to 130 bpm (6-tuplets) to make them sound good. Same for 5-strings i think.
It all depends on the pattern - some of them are simple and some of them are just too difficult.
The 5-strings patterns lesson will be around 120-130 bpm.
No goal - the faster the better! The faster you play sweeps the more you love them!
Kristofer Dahl15th January 2007Do you mainly do it with triad arpeggios (minor and major) or have you experimented with Maj7, min7, dominant, diminished etc?
Pavel15th January 2007Update: just noticed that can play 5-string arps at 170 BPM! Sounds wild.
Also love diminished, maj7 and min7 are really tricky to play - basicly the probleme is in left hand - very uncomfortable finger positions. The main thing is to master the right hand - later it is no problem to play with other shapes of arps. ![]()
beebo15th January 2007Hey Kris for some reason both of my electric guitars only have 21 frets and they're normal guitars so what should I do? Right now I'm broke but could you help me on this one
Pavel15th January 2007That's not a big problem m8! Just start playing the lick form the 15th fret, that would be C-minor, play the same patterns starting from C-minor (15th fret).
RIP Dime15th January 2007The great thing about the guitar is that you can move licks around!
So use the shapes Pavel shows in this lesson, and put them in a key that would fit on your fretboard. So you could use this chord progression: C minor arpeggio- Bb major- C minor- G#major- C minor- Bb Major- G#major- C#major- C minor.
RIP Dime15th January 2007Awww! Pavel beat me to it ![]()
ah, okey.
Btw I got so much Inspiration from this lesson!
I just wanna sweep, sweep and sweep:D
Kristofer Dahl15th January 2007Pavel: Well that's quite some progress! You should keep us updated in the metronome sticky too.
It's interesting you say they (four note arpeggios) are trickier for you - for me it's always been the contrary. In particular, I have found it a lot easier to improvise with with four note arpeggios - as they usually have four notes per string.
This once again proves there are no rights or wrongs! ![]()
beebo16th January 2007I tried counting the numbers in my head on the metronome but cant seem to get it. Do you think you could make like a mini video to show people on how to use the metronome with sweeping. I watched the metronome lesson but I'm still not sure how to use the metronome with sweeping. I'd appreciate the help!
I agree with beebonumma1 I'm confused on how to put them to metronome. I've been trying to do an entire sweep per on beat at around 30 bpm right now but it's difficult to time so many notes per beat. When I try the 6tuplets it doesn't work cause there is eleven notes.
Mark Schiewe16th January 2007Hey Pavel what settings do you use on your DF-7 dirsortion factory pedal?
Pavel16th January 2007OK guys i'll make and audio file of counting and upload it to Metronome Sticky!
Mark: Distortion Model - 5, Low - 12 o'clock, Mid - 15 o'clock, Mid Freq - 12 o'clock, High - 10 o'clock, and Gain - 12 o'clock.
And the sound also depends on the amp.

Here is the link to a video displaying playing sweeps with metronome. Hope it helps.

e|---------------------|what do i do with shapes like this? roll my fingers? because this shape isnt on this video you see
Pavel19th January 2007There will be more sweep lessons next week and more shapes will be covered there.
But yes - you have to roll your finger there.
This is a very cool lick, and a nice pattern for learning sweeps!
I also noticed that if you only have 22 frets that you could end the lick with a bend on the 22nd fret.
Thanks Pavel, show us more!

beebo21st January 2007i don't have the real player thing
so I can't go on
Codyrg21st January 2007Pavel, I want to have your children
Thank you SO much for this lesson! SUPERB playing! Can't wait to hear more from you!
Pavel22nd January 2007Thx for the comments!
More coming very very soon!
@Codyrg: if you are a girl can we have your picture on the forum??
![]()
Kristofer Dahl22nd January 2007Codyrg: Even if you are a man It'd be biologically interesting to see your photo!!
![]()
Pavelm any plans on comin to sweden? If you do stop by Malmö and teach me how to be you
Question: how do you mute the strings more specifically? Mine keep ringing (I play extreeemly slow so dont tell me to slow down ^^)
Pavel23rd January 2007Hahaha ok i won't tell you to slow down!!
It's all about the right hand, you have to keep your hand right at the place where the strings are leaving the bridge so that way you mute them.
Also another advice: don't be afraid of moving your right hand up to 1st string and down to 6th string - it will help you to mute the string you want to mute.
Take a closer look at my right hand and you'll notice i am not only moving the pick but also the whole palm.
Codyrg23rd January 2007Oh I'm a guy...
But the power of the sweep can make anything happen
I'm about to go check out the 5 string sweeping! Thanks again for doing these!
Kristofer Dahl23rd January 2007Codyrg: Judging from your avatar those could be creepy children!
Steekonsum: Perhaps you should also think about releasing your left hand fingers slightly after each pick strike.
Kris: At 'work' right now so can't practice but I will keep the tip in mind! (oh and PS. creepy isn't spelt with an 'a'
)
Pavel: I've been watchin' your hand more closely and remember doing something similiar last night before the neighbours were headin my way. But either I seemed to mute the strings all the time (i.e. palm muting) or it didn't quite work out at all. So, am I supposed to palm mute or is it something I am totally missing here?
Kristofer Dahl23rd January 2007what a?
![]()
Pavel24th January 2007After you play a note and move onto another string you release the previous note played and mute the string with the right hand.
beebo26th January 2007hello pavel, how do you do those whammy tricks at the end I can't seem to figre it out!
Pavel27th January 2007Release the strings, a bit, with Whammy Bar, then play a natural harmonics on 3rd and 4th strings at the 10th fret - play 2 strings together - and then pull your Whammy Bar. (hope it helped, if not - expect a lesson)
Think that could be a good lesson, lesson on Whammy Bar tricks.
beebo27th January 2007yea and maybe if you want to add on to that a wa-wa pedal lesso would be nice all about the talking guitar! lol ![]()
beebo29th January 2007i'm confused on what u mean by relase the strings a bit w/ the whammy bar and pull your whammy bar which way
Pavel29th January 2007Don't worry - i think a lesson on that will soon pop up! ![]()
MickeM30th January 2007Just a stupid question... Why do you pick the G string Down instead of Up when you turn around?
When I start getting speed a always begin picking the turnaround on G with upstrokes and my first downstroke on the B string.
It's frustrating *grmbl*
Pavel30th January 2007I pick it that way because it's the only way to play it fast. The picking also depends on the number of notes in your shape - in this case it's the only way. ![]()
Pavel30th January 2007One more thing: try to play this shape starting with the G string - and you'll get the exact same picking.
MickeM30th January 2007"the only way to play it fast" - A reason as good as any. I will practise more to get it into my mind to downstroke instead of up :-)
shredmandan28th February 2007YEAH
I THINK A FEW LESSON'S ON THE USE OF A whammy would be great.i can do the harmonic sounds and squeel's with the whammy but other than that i dont have a good playing style with it.also info on floyd rose would be great.there are so many tricky things with it.when i first got mine i was like this will be awesome but, then realized it takes a while to get used to it and understand it's setup.
stratman338th March 2007awesome lesson.that could make a sweet solo if u shredded it, and with a whammy bar it would be sweet.keep it up.![]()
stratman338th March 2007this is random, but i just noticed that this smiley is way bigger in this than the forums lol.
GuitarDude19th April 2007I will never be able to play that X_X
Pavel21st April 2007Oh you will!! Just take 30 minutes of sweeps every day and you'll be able to sweep sooner than you expect it!
mattacuk21st April 2007Just a quick question.
Notes: 6-tuplets (6 notes played for each beat of the bar)
Time signature: 4/4
Does this mean i should be playing 4 notes per click or 6?
Pavel23rd April 20074/4 is a meassure. 6-tuplete is a note duration so don't get confused by that.
It still means you play 6 notes per beat! ![]()
mattacuk25th April 2007Thanks Pavel, I understand now after reading up! =O)
mattacuk29th April 2007I wonder if someone might be kind enough to tab out part 3 for us with 22 fret guitars?! =0)
guitardudenr119th June 2007sweeping is so hard;S
The-Levy26th July 2007Sweeping is wicket hard but like pavel said... it takes lots of practice, just think about the last thing you tough it was hard and now you do like a breeze!! Practice Practice Practice!! =)
Munk30th July 2007I have a little theory question.
How do i know where to play the 3 string shape with a given chord? like Am, where should the first note in the shape be?
Munk30th July 2007oh nevermind i figured it out ![]()
guybrush30th July 2007I have a question about the picking...
You do like this: U,P-O,U,D,D,D
But me I do like this: U,P-O,U,U,D,D
It's ok or it will cause a problem later?
Pavel30th July 2007The way you do it is the way Rusty Cooley does it. I do it the way Michael Angelo does it!
I find my way more comfortable to me! So if your way is good to you keep doing it! ![]()
that solo is so kick ass:)
Pavel4th August 2007Thanks! Well, learn it and you can go catch some chicks in guitar store! But be careful when playing in front of their b/f - you might play something better than he can and than you are in troubles! ![]()
deWeLL9th August 2007Thanks for the lesson, I never found a lesson that "easy" to understand how to practice sweeping efficiantly ...
And Pavels pronounciation of the word "off" reminds me of the Klitschko brothers ... very cool *G*
Pavel9th August 2007Hahaha well that's maybe because both they and i are Ukrainians! You know you can easily know where a person is coming from: Russia, Germany, Italy, French by only hearing one sentence in English. It's all in the way they pronounce stuff! ![]()
I'm glad you liked the lesson!
What if you have 21 frets like my crappy guitar :/. How many frets would you move down?
Pavel19th September 2007Move the whole exercise 3 or 4 frets down.
Ok, thanks.
Bitey26th September 2007Okay, I have the Floyd Rose system so it is kind of hard to do the bottom 3 strings for sweeping. Am I the only one with the trouble. Like even when I am not I can't get a good Hammer on or Pull off on the Higher notes on the E string.
In story time approximately can i touch sweeping every day practicing?
Pavel26th September 2007Bitey: it has nothing to do with Floyd Rose. High 3 strings are tin and they are difficult for muting and also for legato. Practice will make it.
r00xIbaneZ: sorry i don't understand what your question is. Can you explain it a bit?
Bitey27th September 2007Yeah and when I do this at a certain point my wrist just explodes in pain. Is there any way to help prevent from that happening?
Pavel27th September 2007Pain and hurting comes when people hold their hands UN-NATURAL trying to imitate something/somebody. Just relax, breath deep and than play. Tension will never bring you any good.
Gustavo28th September 2007i can just say
too fast to clean
awsome
thx pavel
wow amazing.. i love ur style!
but it looks so hard lol
still i'm gonna try to nail it! ![]()
Awesome:D
Carlos Carrillo22nd February 2008Hey Pavel!!!great lesson!!!thanks
Great lesson! I've been going at this for hours! So far I can play the first two arps at 70bpm pretty solid! Haven't even tried the rest yet! :-/ I'm no good at sweeping!! But I'll keep trying!!
Awesome guitaring ..i loved it ......MAKWYLDE ...KEEP ROCKING
chmilew23rd May 2008Well Pavel is not here anymore but i have a question.
Hope that some of you guys could answer me.
In the video #1, Pavel explains the picking :
e|--19-p-15-----------15--19-p-15------------15---
b|-----------17----17--------------17-----17------
g|--------------16---------------------16---------
d|------------------------------------------------
a|------------------------------------------------
e|------------------------------------------------
He says "DOWN" when picking the G string.
If i pick it UP because it's easier for me then down down, am i learning wrong ?
Or there's no rule for that ?
NoMercy14th June 2008i got just the same problem if i pick up it is 10x easy'er to get the "rhythm" of sweeping. can some1 tell us if were learning it wrong?
Ctodd29th June 2008I am by far no expert on this matter but, my personal instructor a while back told me to practice these kind of sweeps just as Pavel does, It was unnatural at first, but after a few short hours you will forget all about your tendency to want to upstroke that note on the 16th fret on the G string.
chmilew1st July 2008Thanks Ctodd for the response
Yeah, i've made a topic about this lesson and you're all said right : the G string should be played downstroke
Now I'm practicing it in that way, a bit harder but I begin to get it !
The topic : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=16940
mba6425th November 2008Great lesson help alot
Alexiaden931st May 2009Nice ! Sometime in the next 50 years I hope I'll be able to play this ! ![]()

Sweeping is one of the coolest shred trick to play crazy solos that sound "WOW!". When you get it down and combine with other techniques you'll be able to play really crazy solos that will sound like: "How the hell did he do that?!". When i first met this technique and heard Michael Angelo Batio sweeping I told myself: "There is no way i will ever be able to do that!". With hard practice and feeling of: "I am gonna get you!"- you too can too!! So get your guitar and build your sweeping skills here!
