Guitar Harmonizing - Harmony introduction/explanation

By Kristofer Dahl

Why play harmonies? - Simply put, this is the easiest way of "fattening" up a basic melody. What's cool is, if you know how to play the melody, all you have to do is move it up or down on the neck, and you'll be playing awesome harmonies in no time! In this lesson I will only cover the harmonies wich I personally find most useful for rock situations. For simplicity, I have divided them up into "horrible sounding" and "strong sounding". The "horrible" ones are b2, minor second, and b5, flat fifth/tritone. The "strong" ones are perfect fourth and perfect fifth. STOP! If you don't understand what this means, don't worry - We will go through exactly where to put the fingers. So you too can understand what a "b2" is, just read on...

How to Practice Guitar

By Kristofer Dahl

There are good and there are bad ways to practice - there are efficient and unefficient ways. Unfortunately, there is no one way of practicing - since music is about personal preference it would be a shame if everyone practiced the same way. There are however some general guidelines which apply no matter what you want to achieve. Since practicing is the path to your goal - it is the most important subject we will touch upon.

Guitar phrasing

By Kristofer Dahl

Learning to phrase with the guitar is as important as learning to speak with your mouth. The word phrasing is more commonly used in jazz music than rock - however, by thinking in terms of "phrasing" and "improvisation" a rock guitarist can explore new territory. This topic is way to big to be treated in one single lesson - so what I will give you here are some shortcuts which help me when my phrases need some improvements...

Eric Johnson Style Solo

By Kristofer Dahl

No one can play like Eric Johnson, his sound is the result of phenomenal picking technique, precise left and right hand synchronisation and fingering, note choice etc. Mr Johnson has extremely sensitive ears - to the point he claims he hears the difference between different battery manufactures. Because the technical aspects of his sound can get quite tricky, we are instead going to focus on the things which will make your playing sound more like Eric Johnson's, regardless of your set-up. By nailing some of the licks in this solo, you will have taken your very first steps towards Johnson land...!

Hopefully you will get started right away with the supplied backing tracks.
