GMC Forum _ Ben Higgins _ Guitar Bushido - Mentoring Course !

Sensei Ben's Guitar Bushido
Guitar = Guitar Bushido = Way of the Warrior
You're 2,000 ft up in the mountains. The icy wind is blowing across your face and chilling your bones. In your hand you clutch your guitar as you make your way towards the big, wooden pillars. Each heavy, laboured step takes you closer to what lies beyond these mountain gates.. a harsh, almost cruel regimen of physical and mental discipline and forging of willpower and character.
Your knuckles are already anticipating the push ups.. your fingers are already trembling at the thought of legato on an empty stomach and your hands are almost frozen in fear at the thought of constant palm muted down strokes. Welcome... you have reached my lair of guitar abuse. This is Guitar Bushido and I will be your Sensei.
I ask only one thing: empty your cup and be prepared to give.
Now that I've set the scene in my slightly unhinged way, I'll tell you what this all about
I'd like to mentor you in your guitar playing and help you identify problem areas and work to improve them. For those of you who are new to GMC, my main interest in guitar playing is in the rock & metal areas so this is where my main levels of experience reside although, regardless of what genre of music you like, I can help anyone reach a certain level of dexterity and ability before you may want to concentrate your focus in a specific musical area.
How I'm going to do it is have 3 groups – Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced. Some of you I already know and can make a judgement on what might suit you best but for anyone interested in attending the Temple of Guitar Bushido please direct me to some visual/audio footage of yourselves. Also, I'd like to mention that even if you feel like you're too much of a beginner, you're not, any time is the right time to start learning more. Also, being a beginner is a good place to be because I won't have to beat any bad habits out of you, unlike some of the characters here at GMC......
Once I've got a few of you guys into one of the 3 groups I'll make 3 seperate threads and start giving some weekly tasks which are exclusive to each group. I would call them assignments but that's too friendly and reminds me of school. Tasks are what Hercules had to do.. a task requires strength and courage.
There will be a deadline set each week, a different one for each group so keep an eye on them so you know how much time you have. I appreciate that everybody has other responsibilities in their lives and a week isn't a very long time to learn something but an inspiring thing to remember is that we all get the same 24hrs in a day, which is the same 24hrs that Steve Vai or Guthrie Govan gets. It's how we use it that determines our results. Whatever time we do get to devote to something we want to excel at, as long as we give 100% during that time, even if it's only 30 mins, then we're still giving everything.
So, are you ready to make your way into the temple ? If so, grab your guitars and sign up here...
END OF GUITAR BUSHIDO COURSE, 06/02/2013
Thank you to everybody for taking part in The Tasks, Guitar Bushido has now come to a close after 52 Tasks that tested everybody's will and endurance !! It has been an honour to be your Sensei and I hope you are able to take the lessons that you learned on the mountain with you wherever you go ! You are guitar warriors now !

I read that post with a big smile on my face, half of it was your writing and the other half was excitement.
"Master Higgins.... I am at the door of your temple, wanting to come in.... Do I gotta wipe my feet?"
This will be amazing for me to be a part of Ben. I am in!
Here is a link to my YT channel http://www.youtube.com/user/JDNDVS?feature=mhee
Some of my skills are better developed than others, but I'd like to think i could tackle the Intermediate course, But I'll leave that call up to you...
Cheers

The first warrior-in- training has embraced his inner fire and stepped over the threshold into a world of pain.. I mean, practice !
No need to wipe your feet as you are already barefoot on the mountain and the only surface is snow !
P.S. As a small note to everybody.. if you're comfortable posting examples of your playing in this thread then you're welcome to do so. If you'd rather do it in a private message, that's also cool.

"Sensei, your new apprentice from Deutschland is here! Öffne das Tor! Prepare to have me in your lair until you have made me into Germany's next Michael Schenker! To show you my determination, I will do as many Liegestuetze (push-ups) right here on this sacred ground as it takes. I will put the package of Donuts on my back. It shows here, my latest video. Would love to master these little skills. Thank you for bringing this Ben.

Unfortunately I've recorded only for collabs recently, so there's only one video and a couple of audio samples of my playing (that is untill I post my rough and just take feat. AKs ), and here they are :
Actually my biggest problem is this - I haven't written a single complete song/composition in 6 or 7 years of my playing, and I don't really know what to do about it . Maybe you can help?

Forget about the squirrels. Where are they when you're struggling with alternate picking or sweeping ? They're no help to a guitarist...

Wow this sounds really cool Ben! I'm down man here is my stuff, not alot to go on but its a start.
I must say your combat skills are impressive, especially after rewatching your subzero and shadow of ninja video I know some special moves too : Hadoken...err I mean alternate picking, bends, vibrato a bit of legato and sweeping but it clearly doens't mean I master any of these techniques. Please teach me your ancient art !

Greetings Disciples ! I trust that you are acclimatising to our snowy lair. After we have all eaten our breakfast of pork pies and ale you shall run around the temple to warm up, followed by 50 pushups and 20 squats.
Then you're ready to collect your guitars from the rack and I will suggest 1 of 3 corners of the temple for you to begin your studies. Don't be offended or dissapointed if you think I have assigned you to a level that you think is lower than you are, I would rather underestimate and then move you to a higher level than the other way around
Also, just because we're using the terms beginner, intermediate, advanced it doesn't mean you're literally a beginner.. they're just relative to the types of things that we're going to be looking at. So, basically what I'm doing is suggesting where I think would be a good place to focus your energies but if you think that you can handle more then go with your instincts
The Tasks themselves will involve either available GMC lessons (recent and archive) or licks that I will make specifically for you. All tasks will have a week to complete. Don't worry if you don't finish everything 100%, just do what you can. As long as you're achieveing something, you're achieveing Also, everything we do will have a reason, even if it's not immediately obvious...
So, eat and drink your fill and whilst you are warming up with morning exercise, I shall prepare the threads.........

Right, I've gone through and drawn up a basic list of groups. Bear in mind, that all of have weaknesses and strengths so we don't really fit into 1 category. I found that everyone I've assigned to Beginner could just as easily be Intermediate so you may find yourselves focusing on different threads for different areas of playing. Same with the Intermediate group (which is the biggest !).. some of you guys are definitely advanced in certain areas but other aspects still need some attention.
So, to cut a long story short.. you'll all probably find that different levels suit different areas of your playing so take Maharzan's lead as an example and try different Tasks from other threads if it feels right and post takes for what ever task you want to try. Enjoy !
Beginner:
Praetorian Nihilist1 (wasn't sure because not much music to go on so you may easily be Inter..) mad Zoom
(I'd say that all you guys are higher than beginner)
Intermediate:
Jaxn4 Quadrium snackajacks Alexiaden93 Gitarrero WeePee Empan metaldan Marek DreamForge superize Poster Boy SirJamsalot Olivier777 Sensible Jones
Advanced: (a very lonely group.. these guys will have colder fingers because they're higher up the moutain.. so you can all laugh at them ! )
Dinaga Hungry for Heaven maharzan Nimrandir AK Rich
That's my idea based on the small amount of listening I had... as I said, trust yourself and pick the Tasks which you think are suitable
Posted by: maharzan Jan 25 2012, 12:00 PM
Cool.. I ate a lot coz I know I am going to starve now. Grabbed a last seater (I always do that) so no one finds out what I am doing. Bring them on master!!
In the Karate dojo, the senior grades have a responsibility to their fellow students to help and guide them in the way... so remember that you can all help each other as well with advice and share your own experiences; what has helped you, what you've struggled with etc..
Begin !

Greetings, disciples !
Everybody can now gather for morning exercise. Pick a partner and carry them on your back for 2 laps of the temple then change over and do it again.
When you're done, it's 100 push ups with a twist.. I want you to clap your hands together between each push up. This will help with your speed
I know I'm being very kind to you.. but I like to give people what they want
When exercise is finished.. you get a 5 minute break to relax and then you all eat your bowl of noodles. Then it's back to your guitar !
Posted by: Gitarrero Jan 29 2012, 10:40 AM

No. Donuts only at the end of a hard working day... and only sometimes if Sensei is feeling generous...

You guys are making me curious! And I found an online-shop that sells that stuff here in Germany. Slightly more expensive than in the UK though...but if you guys say it's worth it?! Or I'll just wait till september, when I am going to the UK for a short trip (most likely). Yes guys...I'm coming to the island this year...beware! Or meet me for a beer.

Wait until September! Meeting for a Beer would be an excellent idea!! I'm sure Sensei wouldn't mind!

* Carries Christian on his back and starts running * GO SLYTHERIN! After finishing the pushups he wants to take a nap.. Because he can do the first 5 patterns on full speed and the last pattern on 200 bpm. So he will finish his practice tonight

Sounds good to me this should happen! However the Sensei is like Mariah Carey.. he has a list of demands:
Private jet, accomodation etc..

Go for it, no permission needed.. the first task is almost over http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=42685&st=0 although you're welcome to jump onbaord now if you want. Or you can wait until Weds and get involved with Task 2

Good morning warriors-in-training !
You will now find that 3 more Tasks have appeared in the forum. From now on, you will see these Tasks appear under the names of 'Beginner Bushido Task 2' etc.. look for them on the day of every deadline for your next Task.
Remember that you can always pick a Task from any group if you feel like you will benefit more from that particular Task that week..
Right, before we go any further.. time for morning exercise.
Warm up with some jogging on the spot, star jumps... 50 push ups, 50 squats. 2 laps of the Temple with a partner on your back then swap.
Your guitars are waiting in the rack...

Welcome to the Temple, Max
Well I'd say you're straddling the Intermediate / Advanced region. You've got great melodic feel with great pick dynamics and bending. I'm not sure where your technical ability is so you'll have to just go with what you think is a good test for you each time.
Both the Intermediate and Advanced Task this week aare both based around Pentatonic alternate picking. I recommend taking a look at Intermediate Task 3
I'm going to respectifully bow out of your mentoring course Ben. I think the Skype lessons with you once a month will give me the feedback I need for my lead chops. The pressure of getting the weekly pieces to a place I am happy with is just to great!! ha ha

I'm very worried about how those 2 sentences look together !
I think I should explain that 'Inside Men' was a tv programme about a robbery that was done with the help of men 'on the inside', in other words men that worked at the place that was being robbed. Not a programme about literally going inside men.
Just thought I'd clear that up before rumours started !

For posting videos, you can upload to Youtube and then embed the youtube code in here.
For uploading just audio, you can hit the 'Add reply' button at the bottom right corner of the forum and you'll have the option to 'browse' and 'upload' files. Mp3's are best if you can because they're smaller but people upload wavs too.

Awesome, Ben! I am honored and as a formal martial artist I am excited to make the guitar a more active , all present part of my life . I am gone on a sojourn until April 1 but will hit the ground running upon my return. I play in a 80's hairband called Stiff Kitty.

Enter The Temple and join the other disciples. There are 2 paths to take each week - Apprentice Tasks or Warrior Tasks.
Apprentice Tasks are aimed at beginner, intermediate
Warrior Tasks are also aimed at intermediate but also advanced
All you have to do is just follow my personal forum and every week a new Task will be uploaded, usually on a Friday but sometimes on a Saturday if I'm late. You can either start on a current Task or you can even go back and start with some of the older ones - it's up to you !

The latest Task will be the one with the highest number. In this case it's 18, so just look for the corresponding thread and start learning the Task
Or, like I said earlier, you can also go back through the list and choose some earlier Tasks to do. This might be a good idea as we covered a lot of ground. Picking, hand co ordination, legato, string bending and vibrato. It doesn't matter if you're on a different Task to other people, this is all here for people to come and use whenever they can, or want.

Absolutely !!
What I did was originally have 3 levels:
Beginner Intermediate Advanced
But then changed it to 2 groups:
Apprentice Warrior
Apprentice now covers Beginner/lower intermediate so you are welcome to get involved with the latest Apprentice Task here if you want:
What some people are doing is going right back to the beginning and starting there, because we covered a lot of very fundamental and basic techniques. You can find a whole list of previous Bushido Tasks here, so I recommend you bookmark this page
One thing to remember is that you don't have to be able to play the Task at the same speed as the original lesson.. it's more about improving all the different aspects of playing. Getting better co-ordination, timing, freeing your fingers up etc..
Welcome aboard !!!

Hey there Man, I will be glad to welcome you onboard ! As for what to do, it's nice and simple.
There's 2 threads you can choose to follow each week.
Apprentice Bushido Tasks - for beginner & intermediate
Warrior Bushido Tasks - for higher intermediate and advanced
It's easy to find the latest one because it will appear every Friday (or sometimes a day later) on my personal board here
The latest one will be whichever had the highest number in the title, like Apprentice Bushido Task 40, for example.
I'll post a Task for you guys to learn within one week. It'll be a lesson from GMC or it might be a lick that I've made. You can use that thread to post updates of your progress, or just ask for some help if you're having problems with it. In terms of fulfilling the Task itself you can either upload an audio take (in the form of mp3, soundcloud link etc) or a video take. It's completely up to you. Video takes help me see your fingers moving around so it may help me diagnose any problems you may be experiencing so that's the advantages of doing that but it's not necessary
Hopefully that's made things understandable for you to jump in and get involved. Some of the GMCers have gone right back to the start of the Bushido Tasks and are learning them in the background. We covered a lot of fundamentals back near the start.. but you can also start with the most current Tasks. It's all down to your choice, that's the beauty of Guitar Bushido !
