GMC Forum _ Cosmin Lupu _ Grunge Vs Metal Video Collab
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 27 2012, 11:32 AM
Good afternoon GMC!
I want to thank my fellow instructor and friend here, Mr. Gabriel Leopardi for the inspiration he provided in his thread, in order for me to come up with this collab idea Thanks Gabe!
It's Grunge vs. Metal and there will be guitars screaming and wailing in the battle!
Here's the plan:
The backing track is made out of 2 types of riffs - a grungy one and a metal one, so choose whichever you like and solo over it, while trying to wear an outfit appropriate to the style you have chosen you can choose both if you wish so!
Tempo: 110 BPM
Scales you could use: D minor and D blues
Material format and indications:
- please send the materials through rapidshare if possible - Audio - wav. files - one containing the backing and one only the recorded part - Video - mp4. avi. - try to use the conventional formats if you can.
Deadline: February, 25th, 2012
Let's see what sort of madness we can pull together

Well.. you ROCK C-Maestro! Awesome backing. I am so in

Alright! Great mates! I'll try to be a bit of both I just had an idea regarding ARIA - I realized we are a combination between djent and grunge, therefore, the style born could be called GRENT

I'm confused...can I play a solo for this collab? Or rather not? Maybe just grungy chords? Guess I'll have to figure it out
In short: I'm in!

Hey Cosmin! This backing is FANTASTIC!! This is a first idea that I recorded over it!
Yes it is! Sounds killer Todd-meister! Can't wait for the final take!

Great take Todd! It sounds like you and I have some similar ideas in our takes, although admittedly your take is MUCH cleaner than mine!! I personally felt like my brain was telling my fingers to play some "Alice in Chains" style licks/tone/bends.... do you happen to be an AIC fan?
GMC has me laughing about some of the OLD riffs I conjure up subconsciously while playing a lesson... for example, while riffing on Sinisia's "Lydian Collab" yesterday, I started playing a Satriani line (big surprise...it's lydian!!) that I haven't heard in almost a decade (and I don't really play/study that style either), mixed with part of a solo from a live Phish disc I haven't heard in years!! The ol' brain doesn't easily forget your influences, and can JUMP into your solo without even trying!!
QUOTE (Todd Simpson @ Jan 31 2012, 11:13 PM)
Here is what I've got so far, is this along the line of what you were thinking? I sorta blend in both bits
Ok, here's my "for fun" take again.... (can't afford recording interface until tax return!)
Also, I'm at work, so couldn't put on my grunge outfit!! I swear, if they ever put me in a GMC comic, it will deal with the fact that I'm always submitting vids from the mattress store I work at!! Imagine walking in to get a better night's sleep, and you see THIS....
So, I'll be the first to admit that it's pretty sloppy, but I really didn't put a ton of time into it. It's 50% "half mapped", and 50% improv....which doesn't really work for me when I'm playing more rock/metal stuff, since I'm more of a funk/country/blues player. But, something tells me with some help from y'all, I'll have some killer metal licks to pull out in no time!!
If I get time, I'll try and clean it up again and re-submit. Plenty of time before the deadline, but I felt like posting this rough take anyway, since I was just having fun with it (in between customers, that it!). Great collab Cosmin!! Can't wait to hear the finished result.

Hey mate! Nice take I'm really looking forward to having you on this one so, if it happens that you have the means to submit the 'official' take before the deadline, I'd be honored to have ya!
I think you did very well for a funk/ country/ blues player a little more work on some of the bends and it can be grungily perfect to fit the scene! I am a very big AIC fan (from time to time, I'm playing in an AIC tribute band called Redrum)
Keep us updated mate

Great minds think alike! Yup, love Alice in Chains And yup, I was thinking this called for a bit of AIC so yeah, I"m doing a bit of channeling Jerry Cantrell

Though I'm still waiting til tax return day to purchase an interface to deal with the latency issue, I DID find one cheap workaround..... If I play through my Roland MicroCube amp (for some effects, with no latency) into the mic in jack on my laptop I don't have much latency. It seems to come in when I run Amplitube for effects. So I'll have my buddy give me a quick tutorial on how to use Adobe Audition to record my guitar to a backing track, and I should have the means to start submitting better stuff. Also, I can run Amplitube AFTER the fact to help tone and whatnot, but before figuring out to use the Roland for effects, my options were either -PURE plain tone, with no latency -Amplitube effects, with latency so horrible I can't even play on time
Neither of which was acceptable.
I hope I have time to go back submit a cleaner, more organized take of my original idea. If not, Todd is pretty much channeling my ideas into a cleaner, more rip-tastic version anyway!!!
Thanks for the support Cosmin!! And yeah, my bends were pretty horrible on that take!!

Posted by: derper Feb 19 2012, 11:31 PM
My new recording interface (line 6 kb37) should be arriving any day now.... but until then, the best I can submit it that "live" video take I posted for fun, which I don't think is usable because it doesn't have a separate guitar-only track. But, if I get enough time when my interface arrives, I'll try and do a "re-take" of my original idea and send it to ya!!

Guys! Yesterday was the deadline for this one, but I see no takes yet, should we extend the deadline until next FRIDAY?
Posted by: derper Feb 26 2012, 11:05 AM
Yes PLEASE!!! I just got my interface, and just got it working. Also, I just got home from the last of my gigs I've been cramming for, that have been keeping me away from your Vivaldi Winter lesson, and all the rest of the stuff I was working on.
Extend it, and I PROMISE I'll submit something!! So happy and excited to have this interface and all the goodies!! I certainly will put something down this week.

Ok, here's my take....but I have to make a couple "excuses" first!
But really, it is my first time submitting this way since I've gotten my new interface, so I'll appreciate any feedback on the quality and such.
Also, I didn't get any real time to work on this. I just got home from watching Dan Balmer Trio at the Jazz Club in Portland, and I was up late and this is my 3rd "attempt".... pretty much all improv, and there are some obvious mistakes. I think I made that sound from Metalocalypse when Toki tries to take a solo and fails, or when people cuss. But I felt like giving it a try, and it's better then nothing perhaps.
Anyway, I hope this works... and if I get more time, I'll work out a better take before friday.

Hey Erik! Just heard some cool lines there! Develop it, record it film it and let's rock!
Posted by: ElHombre Feb 29 2012, 06:43 PM
I decided to go with the original take, so I edited it back with the whole ending The reason was at first I wasnt happy with the ending, cause I was going to hit a harmonic on the E string, but I kinda had to rehit it, but now I dont really notice it, thinks is sounds cool. You will see in the video that the ending will be very cool
I could have made a cleaner take, I used 110 % distortion Metal is metal.
I will send all the files on rapidshare to you cosmin I also upload the final soundfile here if anyone wants to hear it

It would be great to have a new video, if possible just to avoid anything beer related what do you think? I have nothing against pre-recorded material, so go ahead and shoot the vid with a glass of water and some chocolate, even though beer is both metal and grunge
My connection is a nuisance that's why I'm a little slow

Yeah I will have to go with a pre recorded once since I had some beer, vodka etc on my desktop while recording myself. And GMC doesnt encourage alcohol, not me either really

I can't believe that my first collab submission with my new interface is such a "fail", and I forgot is was a video collab!! I totally would have shot video then, but I just darn forgot and got so excited to record the audio on my new interface with all of the pod farm goodies! Now I'm not sure if I'll have time to re-shoot before the deadline (tomorrow?). I could possibly do it in the morning tomorrow (fri), but with the time difference I think I may still miss the deadline.
Bummers. In the words of Billy Joel, "Get it right the first time, that's just the main thing...."

Still connected Here comes the solo without backing.
!!!!!!!! I'm starting the mp3 at zero where the backing track actually starts so there is silence at the head of this track.
Alrightie everyone! The entries are over aside from Todd's video on which I am waiting t'would be a shame not to, as long as he submitted everything else and he is having troubles with the connection.

Awesome take Todd!!
Also, you unintentionally answered a question/solved a problem I've had recently. I just got my interface a few weeks ago, which takes care of latency.....UNLESS I run the audio out through my speakers. Now they are NOT actual monitors, it's my 1/8'' audio in-to my home theater system. Decent sound and all (great to plug in an ipod, or stream music from a laptop) but it creates just a bit of latency.
So I had been wondering what to do, when I start shooting for vid collabs.
The answer is easy: ROCK THE HEADPHONES!! It sounds better anyway!

Yup Headphones make things a lot easier when doing vid collabs. A good pair of headphones is essential for any home studio. They end up being a second reference and if you are recording in the same room with an amp, (as if often the case) they help isolate you from the spill from the amp. I LOVE these i'm using now. Honestly the best I've heard and I"ve tried dozens of "high end" sets. These are cheaper than some of the others I tried and liked far less. These run about $100 U.S.
Hey Todd, looking to buy a pair myself so, you're saying these are the best deal, huh?
Posted by: derper Mar 7 2012, 11:15 PM
At the last minute...(perhaps too late) is some vid to go with my audio. Batteries dies, so it was the only take I could get. For some reason, the camera gives me an error and plays "blank" video on quicktime, but then it shows up on youtube!
I hope the video file works for you! Getting a new camera, or webcam to fix this.

Hey mate, thanks for the vid - I tried to play it but I can't see it - if it works well in Vegas it will stay in the collab!
Posted by: derper Mar 8 2012, 07:24 PM
Yeah, it's the dumbest "error" with that camera! It used to work fine, but since the camera is old....perhaps the updates to the video player (try using Quicktime to view the vid! Windows Media Player won't view it ever, quicktime used to work/sometimes works for me) updates are no longer compatible with that camera's old format. Either way, it's an annoying new "glitch" I'm dealing with, and has basically rendered that old camera as useless.
Time for a new camera!
Oh well.....that flannel wasn't very "grunge" anyway!
Thanks for trying to get me in on this one Cosmin! Back to practicing the Vivaldi Arpeggios today! I'm getting quite close to full-speed now! i'll post a vid of my progress soon.
Posted by: ElHombre Mar 8 2012, 07:29 PM
What is the error? The video format? I changed my video on my mac to .avi, just by removing "m4v" and typing in "avi" at the end
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 9 2012, 08:47 AM
Not the video format, the vid doesn't show any image when played
Posted by: derper Mar 9 2012, 08:12 PM
It's such an annoying, and WEIRD error! I don't even understand how it shows no video on my computer, but it WILL when I upload it to youtube!! Of course, that doesn't help for this collab, since you can't add/edit youtube videos..... ick. Gonna try and get a new camera today, actually. Sorry Cosmin....I tried! Even rocked a non-grunge flannel in the vid!!

At least GMC is forgiving of my failures!
Got a surprise for ya

Hey Todd, looking to buy a pair myself so, you're saying these are the best deal, huh?
I personally love these headphones. I"m sure you can find folks who prefer other sets, even folks that can't stand these. But honestly having tried pair, after pair, these are really hard to beat in the price range. But if possible, give them a listen before buying along with some other pairs. I kept seeing these cans in various studios, facilities etc. So I finally got a pair and now I get it. You can get nice cans from AKG for more money, but in this price range, I have yet to find anything I like better. Here is the link to info on the AKG site.
now, I'd like to thank all of you guys who participated and invite you to my next collab -> http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=43406
In the order of appearance on the screen:
-> Rammikin - mate, I chose your take for starting the vid because you were the only one who started before the backing track which is a very nice thing to do - diversity is awesome every time. I would recommend a bit more work on the vibrato making it a little wider I also like the way you developed a theme in order to open the heavy part of the backing track!
-> Gitarrero - octaves are always a sure way to make things work just pay attention not to slip off to often
-> Todd - has left his nice mark on this collab - thank you Todd!
-> ElHombre - hello there mr MetalShred i like your take as it's sprinkled with all sorts of nifty techniques and phrases - the only thing which I think can be improved would be the fluidity between them, in lesser words, the phrases would sound better if you would connect them in a more fluid way!
-> our little Cameo Appearance by DERPER well ,since your vid was shot after the audio, the audio track and the vid were different from a point on - I mean you played different things, but since you struggled till the last minute to submit the materials, I thought it would be cool to make you the star in this one
-> hey! is that Wolverine who learned how to use tapping?
see you at the next one mates!!!

Well done Cosmin Just one thing, Isnt my playing a bit unsynched with the BT or did you want it that way? Compare with the file I am adding of my original playing!

It may be mate, but since you haven't left any audio on the vid, it was pretty difficult to sync them perfectly - leave the audio on for the next one please, k?

Awesome job everyone! Really fun to see it all in action, and surprised that my vid made it in! Thanks!
I bought a new camera yesterday (works GREAT, so no more video issues!) so I'm looking forward to the next ones!

Yeah Cosmin, that solo is AMAZING! I've been wanting to incorporate a similar style solo to my section on "Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest - Bloody Tears"!! I would love to learn some inspiration/technique from that solo!!
