what's up everyone, i've been playing for a while now but i skipped some beginner scales and moved on to harder techniques like sweeping, tapping, etc. Anyway, now i'm trying to relearn the pentatonic scale which i used to think were boring but i see how they can really help (especially in improv).

I'm trying to practice these the best way possible and i've heard something but i'm not sure if it's true. Will playing on my cheap acoustic guitar benefit me more than my electric stratocaster?

Also, if you know any other things that will help me learn the pentatonics better please post.

Hi there!! Im not sure if practicing them on your acoustic is a better idea, but when you play on electric you have to make sure your muting the unused strings when playing with distortion and you will be missing out on this. Also the kinds of phrases and techniues you use will sound totally different between the two.

The way I see it, if Kris learnt to play advanced pentatonics its good enough for me to learn exactly the same way. I would totally recommened going though his Penatonic position shifting lessons in the 101 section!

edit : Also Ivans pentatonic lesson is totally awsome and well worth doing ! biggrin.gif

It's very important to learn this. However, practicing on acoustic as its advantages too, like it gives you more strength in your finger muscles.

Acoustic and electric are different , so If electric is your main instrument (play it more often) I suggest learning scales on the strat...I don't think that practicing on cheap acoustic will benefit you much when you transfer to electric..

Don't practice on you cheap acoustic guitar, but play it form time to time - it will give you new insights and ideas (for example: using slides more effectively).
