Great list. I will check into all those, not familiar with a lot of them.

Not on your list, my favorite recent band, from Las Vegas Nevada, The Killers

Somewhat ironic about BD and DADT Twibeard that a big corporation forced the name changes when most of the bands, and many of the record labels (ie SST/Dischord), set up as indie to oppose big corps sad.gif . I'll change the subject to avoid a political argument on your thread though mate wink.gif smile.gif .

A few more for the list:

Indie - Free Kitten, Mission of Burma, Wolf Eyes, , Liz Phair, Band of Susans

Experimental - Nurse with Wound, Matmos, Karen Findley, Controlled Bleeding

Post rock - Manitoba, Cul de Sac.

Cheers,
Tony

A stupid question but how are the different genres like "indie" and "post rock" defined? unsure.gif

A stupid question but how are the different genres like "indie" and "post rock" defined? unsure.gif

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that primarily exists in the independent underground music scene. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with underground music as a whole, though more specifically implicates that the music meets the criterion of being rock, as opposed to indie pop or other possible match-ups. These criteria vary from an emphasis on rock instrumentation (electric guitars, bass guitar, live drums, and vocals) to more abstract (and debatable) rockist constructions of authenticity.
Indie rock is shorthand for independent rock, this is the Rock made by "the man in the street" for many of its artists are or were unsigned or signed to independent record labels, rather than major record labels. It is not strictly a genre of music (although the term is often used to reference the sound of specific bands and the bands they have influenced), but is often used as an umbrella term covering a wide range of artists and styles, connected by some degree of allegiance to the values of underground culture, counterculture, and (usually) describable as rock music. Genres or subgenres often associated with indie rock include lo-fi, post-rock, sadcore, C86, and math rock, to list but a few; other related (and sometimes overlapping) categories include shoegazing and indie pop.
Indie rock artists place a premium on maintaining complete control of their music and careers, releasing albums on independent record labels (sometimes their own) and relying on touring, word-of-mouth, and airplay on independent or college radio stations for promotion. Some end up moving to major labels, often on favorable terms won by their prior independent success.

Post-rock is a music genre characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but utilizing rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions that are not found in rock tradition. Simply put, it is the use of 'rock instrumentation' for non-rock purposes. Practitioners of the genre's style typically produce instrumental music.
As with many musical genres, the term is arguably inadequate as a concise descriptor: for example, Don Caballero and Mogwai were among the more prominent bands of the 1990s described as post rock, but the two bands' music has very little in common besides the fact that they are both largely instrumental. As such, the term has been the subject of backlash from listeners and artists alike.
Although firmly rooted in the indie scene of the 1980s and '90s, post-rock's style bears little resemblance musically to that of indie rock. Quote: wikipedia

Manitoba released two albums that I know of: Start Breaking My Heart, and; Up In Flames - both on Leaf Records. They won an award from the Canadian Independent Music Awards back in 2002. I may be wrong but I think they changed their name late 2006 and recoded another album under their new name. I put them in as post rock but I guess some would classify them as electronica.

Cheers,
Tony

Okay Tony thanks - I think my problem was that Manitoba and Dan Snaith changed the band name to Caribou lately. Please correct me if I got this wrong mate.
Hey biggrin.gif more CD/LP's with old band-names that could bring a fortune in the future?

For the heavier alt can you add Chavez? [filthy guitar playing here]
For Indie add Rollerskate Skinny [Ireland], Cornelius [Japan]and for stoner rock [indie] please add a band from my home town [Adelaide] called Wolf & Cub who 4AD signed and have done fairly well with an international tour. Album is called 'Vessels' and I enjoyed it immensely [even without being a stoner!!]
Thanks for the post; getting some good leads to follow.

Wolf & Cub finished an international and then Australian tour last year. They finished the tour in Adelaide and announced that one of the 2 drummers was quitting to study, so I don't know where their heads are at. [I don't know them personally, but enjoyed seeing them live] The radio station JJJ has concert footage on youtube; tasty.
Wolf & Cub 'March of clouds'

Chavez 'Unreal is here'

Pleased to help Twibeard
