QUOTE (fkalich @ Feb 15 2008, 04:01 PM) *
My first impression of him was "if I showed that to someone unfamiliar with shred, and said this guy was just making a joke video, he can't play guitar at all, I expect they would believe it".

I knew it was crap, I can tell easily, but just for kicks, I cleaned it up a bit (the hum) and slowed it down to 20% of his recorded speed.

I have two observations:

1) It is garbage, just listen. And yes, if you listen to someone really good like Gilbert or Batio slowed down, they still sound musical, clean. Even listen to Muris in his Gilbert 2 lesson, which is at 150bpm. Slowed down, you hear he is still precise with his note groups. This guy just is playing garbage, but it is like a V8 engine that has some screwed up cylinders. If you rev it fast enough, you can't hear the garbage distinctly anymore, it is going to fast.

2) Even then, if you listen, it does not sound very fast here. Now according to him it should be over 10 notes per second, which is like 150bpm 16th notes, which is pretty fast. But he sounds slow at 20%, much slower. Why? He is not hitting all those notes, just some of them, most he just passes over, only a fraction of them sound out.

What amazes me, is how anyone can be impressed with this. But I figure, the universe has hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, and it is 15 billion years old, and heck, according to M theory there may be an infinite number of universes, so one has to figure in all that time and space, sentient beings can think quite a few things that I find hard to understand.

Totally agree. Theres thousands of these guys, complete joke. dry.gif

Congrats on the triple post Tony wink.gif tongue.gif

Less jealousy please.

This guy is extremely fast and extremely clean. First of all, in the description it says "demostration." If you guys wanted to hear a melodic song why did you click on a thread that says "Fastest guitarist in the world?" It doesn't say "Melodic song," why? Because once again, this is just a mere demonstration. And speed doesn't define how good someone is but I think everyone can agree that it is a great tool to have and this guy has mastered it.

Just look at John Petrucci for example, he has made plenty of good solos and I don't think anyone can deny that. He also can play extremely fast. He uses speed as a tool to create good solos with. And listen to "Under a Glass Moon" solo. There is one part where the notes are pretty much a blur because they are like 25 notes per second, like you guys say he doesn't create note blurs. If you play fast enough, the notes will eat eachother, no matter how good you are.

I dont think there was any jealousy, me and Fkalich were just doing the rational thing in slowing the sound down to see if he was hitting all the notes, even if there is a blend at high speeds, upon slowing down there should still be articulation of the notes, take a look at Fkalich's mp3 file, you can hardly say that each of every 10nps is being hit.

Melody has only been mentioned once in this thread, by Uncreator, no-one was completely outing his lack of melody because as you say that is not what this video is about. No, it was about speed, and I think we can fairly say, with conclusive evidence, that there is a lot of lost notes, this guy is no master, he is just sloppy.

Not trying to get flamed.. but.

Did you not hear the 20% slowed down version?

His hands are completely synced up but, at that speed the room for error is so small the no one can controll it, and he did not hit many notes.

exactly. Well said. Im really sick of all these "guitarists" on youtube who think that speed and technique are everything. if it doesn't have feeling, a soul, then theres no point. all your doing is playing a guitar really fast with no emotion. that video was the equivalent of taking a crap really fast. its fast, and its crap.

I can drive my car 200kmph...and probably hit the wall or a tree...guess I'm a speedy driver ohmy.gif

Really,I don't think that was fine "demonstration" of the speed,
pretty lot of "swallowed" notes,ok,that was damn fast so you can't control everything,
and that's why I say it was not the best way to demonstrate it,imho. smile.gif

Well, I have to hand it to anyone that can invoke M theory to explain why a messy player gets away with it ...

You, Bobo, and the night vision goggles certainly get my attention smile.gif

BTW, what is your position on the use of the Anthropomorphic principle as a justification of multiple possible universes allowed for by String Theory?

What you meant to say was, "The music doesn't strike emotions in me."

Sound waves don't have emotion. The sound waves interract with you to create the "emotions."

You, like many others probably have an extremely narrow vision of what "emotion" is. It is much more than just sadness. If it doesn't make you feel sad, then that doesn't mean the artist isn't conveying his emotions. For example, Dragonforce is usually picked on as being having emotionless guitarists. However every song I hear by them is extremely uplifting. Happiness is an emotion too!!! When I watch an extremely fast guitar player shred, I feel intimidated. There we go, another emotion.

Anyway music is subjective, no one can say who plays with emotion and who doesn't, because everyone does. There is no way to measure it. That is right. Shredders play with just much emotion as any other guitar player like Jimi Hendrix or David Gilmour; just in a different way.

Once again, it is ALL subjective. It isn't as simple as:

Music you like= emotion.
Music you don't like= no emotion.

And technique is a huge part of guitar playing. Good luck getting your emotions across when your technique causes the music to sound like total crap. The emotion you will be conveying is frustration.

And speed, while not the most important part of music, is still a great tool to have in soloing.
