Hey guys!

Has anyone ever seen the movie 'The Secret'? If you haven't, check out the first 20 minutes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b1GKGWJbE8.

Basically what they're saying in this movie is that everything we have faced is something that we have thought about. Positive thoughts attract positive situations and make you feel good. Negative thoughts have the opposite effect. By feeling as if you already have achieved your goals and then working your ass off for these goals, you can do anything.

Since I've seen this movie my life has been turned around in a good way. I feel way better than I used to, I have achieved things that I thought I could never do. Well, I'm not claiming that I have done so many big things, but to me they were big and that's good enough!

How stupid and hippie-like this movie may sound... it works for me! I really hope you guys can have the same experience of life as I do now, so you can battle whatever problems you have or fight for any goal. You can have anything you want, as long as you believe in it and keep on trying, no matter what happens.

Now this is pretty scary/cool. yesterday i saw your link and watchet the 20 min intro of the secret and afterwards i watchet related videos and became quite interested, actually wanted to watch the whole movie but thus living in norway i thought that i`d hade to order the movie. now heres the strange thing. today i went to my local music store for no particulary reason (and note that i only go there if there is something i need to buy!) and the first thing that i saw was a copy of the secret. coincident? or did i make it myself, that it would be there?
after watching the movie today i tend to believe that it`s the latter.

Haha I don't believe in coincidence, though the chance that there's a 'The Secret' DVD in a music store is pretty big

This is total nonsense. It's just the same rehashed version of `think your way to success, and make me richer while you do it` that we see all the time, but mainly in our spam filter. The supposed `links` with quantum theory were good though, they literally made me laugh out loud! Not to mention the oh so convincing claims that I'm sending out magical universe altering brain beams, now that was classic!

This is almost as bad as the cults that convince people to do anything they want, simply by repeating ridiculous claims with no evidence. And as long as people are willing to shell out the dollars for this junk it's not going any time soon

The problem I have with the "secret" is that it seems to apply to your personal life only. That secret seems to work only to satisfy one's personal wants (money, fame, and so forth)...

Yes, that secret might work, but I think there is something very wrong with that it makes the user focus on himself. The real secret is LOVE.

Secondly - I should've added that the movie is pretty Americanized Yeah, I guess there are some exaggerations.

It's allright that you're sceptical and think it's nonsense. Of course, it's a way for these people to make money, but if you contribute to their bank account... you haven't really understood the movie. It's not about buying all sort of stuff to understand the Law of Attraction and become some sort of hippie, it's about feeling good, being confident about your goals, determination. And that's how you reach goals, whether you wanna believe it or not.

I don't think we will ever be able to prove something we believe in. It's just there.

I was gonna try and explain stuff about energy and quantum physics here, but as I'm far from being a classified quantum physician... never mind Why do you think it's such nonsense anyway? I mean, about the quantum physics, I'm interested in hearing that.

@ David: you're absolutely right It's something that I'm very careful of. I don't wanna become some selfcentered ass. The Secret is way better when also paying attention to other people. At least, for me. I feel way better when everyone around me feels better. But I'm not trying to make them feel better so I can feel better, I just want them to feel good. Haha... that's a wicked sentence, but I'm just trying to prove some innocence Actually, what I'm saying here... I think that is love. You want people to feel good, cause you love 'em. (There's probably more to it though ) What do you think?

There is a big difference between `exaggeration`, as you put it, and lying

Personally, I have a real problem when someone creates a very elaborate lie to coax people out of their hard earned cash, it's fundamentally wrong. If they said, "if you think positively and have a good attitude then things are more likely to go your way in life" then fine! But thats not what it says, it lies and twists a plethora of half truths to support it's argument at the financial expense of easily led people. Heres a quote taken from another sceptic:

"Are we supposed to believe the traffic jam wouldn’t have happened if it were not for this one guy worrying about being late? And what about the other people in the traffic jam? Were they all thinking negative thoughts about being late? Were there no positive-minded people in the area, thinking about being on time? And if there were, doesn’t that debunk the “always works every time” mantra? And what about the guy getting his bike stolen? Are we to assume that if another guy had left an identical unlocked bike at the same location, the bike thief would still have stolen the locked bike of the person worried about theft? Has anyone done a controlled study on this?"

It simply doesn't work because there are many, many people in the world and their thoughts cannot all influence lives in this way as it would cause contradictions. Plus, we can measure magnetic field fluxuations around peoples heads...and there are none.

Regarding quantum physics: Quantum physics states that things only truly exist when they are intelligently observed (as observing things compresses their wave forms effectively bringing them into physical existance). Furthermore, observing something will alter the thing that you are observing in some way, shape or form. However, the effects of this are only noticable within the most tiniest of scales and only affect things like the probable position of an electron. I assure you, quantum physics does not suggest that thinking about a good day will cause a fundamental change in the fabric of the universe enabling a good day to happen

I have to agree that The Secret isn't the best movie/book on this topic. It has 3.5/5 stars on Amazon. Does that, however, mean that the entire concept is BS? Hell, no.

You really need to realize one thing. Who the hell cares if The Secret is "scientific"? Why don't you try it out yourself? Who cares if you are "unscientifically" making loads of money, playing killer guitar, being perfectly healthy and attracting lots of hot chicks?

I don't care if it SHOULD work. I care if it actually WORKS.

Forcing yourself to think in the "good way" ( i.e. positive thinking ), lead to wrong vision of reality. Things are what they are, sometimes they are positive sometimes they are negative. So better stay of from such lame philosophies. The key is seeing things as they are, and using your brain in order to change the situation to fit You as much as You can.

Oh and I had a friend that strongly believed in "the secret". He died in a car accident.

I don't really see this as something you "believe" in. It's just about thinking about opportunities rather than obstacles, and I think it's the right way to think, to focus on what you want rather than what you don't want.

Positive thinking can benefit lives, yes...but that should not be confused with `the secret` being correct. It's important that we use deductive thought to tell the difference between the truth and illusions, right? And scientific!? I've only watched two of the videos in your post...but what the heck? They're full of far worse illogical and downright mystical nonsense than `the secret` is. Max Plank used the aether (misquoted as some religous gobbledygook in the videos) to explain relative motion. This theory has been almost unanimously rejected now and even when it was suggested it could not have been applied in any of the ways that the videos were suggesting. It's almost beyond belief

Well, wich one do you think takes those hard opportunities that can make the difference? The person who only thinks about how he can fail, or the who thinks about how he can succeed. I'm not saying that the movie this thread is about is super good or anything, just that people who seriously think it's better to think that they'll probnably fail with something will probably do it because of the thinking. That's not any hocus pokus or anything, it's just common sense, and I think this movie is trying to sell that common sense in a "hotter" way, but that doesn't make the point any worse.

Still, I do believe in The Secret (or at least it's ideology ). It has worked for me and no-one can disprove that.
