Well I don't think its much because the progression similarity..Many songs have similar/same progressions..But in this case the Vocal melody is practically the same as Satriani's solo over the progression..And similarities are huge..When you listen to them compared its pretty much the same song..But in this case its very interesting thing that the Satch's song doesn't have vocals (and lyrics)..So It may not be that clear of the case...In coldplay's song vocal is singing notes from the Satch's solo but of course not all of them and in the same manner...It may be very uncertain future of the law suit because of that...I think there are some rules on how many Chords/notes in a row has to match the others song in order to be a plagiarism..We'll see what comes up...I just think Satriani is hit by the feeling that his song got "stolen" by Coldplay, I don't think he is doing it just for the money rather justice..Its not ok to steal other people songs..If they liked it so much they could have asked for permission and write down the Satch as the author..
But all in all maybe just maybe Coldplay accidentally came up with the progression and melody that matches other song..That is not impossible too..

It is possible that Coldplay did a song unintentionally the same, but nevertheless, Satch does have the right to sue them because the theme is basically the same.

OC you are being very harsh to Satriani, Just because he aint on the TV or in magazine's all the time dont mean he aint loaded, Plus its the principle it is a rip off of satches song if you wrote a song then someone plagiarised it you would be miffed. You do tend to go of on a tangent, "Ohh I detest him"" is it really that big a deal no so lets move on with life.

Um it's the same chord progression AND phrasing, how is that not being ripped off, it's so blatant it's ridiculous. Is a single person giving him flack actually ever released and sold music, I'm guessing no...It's straight up copyright infringement...I had never heard the song, looked up the tab for satch's version and played the chords and realized I was playing the coldplay song (the synth part at the beginning), and then I started playing the solo and realized I was playing the same notes the coldplay singer was singing

I do hate him because he is just trying to get money because he is a failure. I couldn't care a less if somebody sounded just like me and made money. He wouldn't be playing my solo line in a song so I wouldn't sue him. People sue each other too easy these days. Satriani is just crying because he is running low on cash.

+1, the melody is identical, come on. Satriani has a right to protect his intellectual property, and the vocal line follows the guitar melody almost exactly.

I also think OC you were just a bit harsh in your criticism of Satriani, for example you said "he is a failure." and "he is running low on cash". Saying things like that are stupid, firstly, he is one of the most successful instrumental rock musicians of the past 20 years. Secondly, what the hell would you know about his financial situation? Making cheap cracks about him needing money because of the financial crisis doesn't make you sound cool or witty, it makes you sound like a t00l!

It might not be that big of a deal, If they'd use the same melody in some small part of the song, but the melody repeats through out the whole damn song... And I really don't care who has more money, All I know is that Satriani has made a tons of awesome songs... Coldplay not so much...

Dude, your burying your head in the sand on this one. Do you really think it's about money. It's about artist expression and blatant copyright infringement. The money grabbers are Coldplay if they really did copy Satriani's music. Court's will decide this. I think it's obvious.

I pray Satriani loses. It isn't copyright infringement and if Satriani wins then there will be a lot of bands suing each other over very minor similarities. And yes it always comes down to money with egotistical people like Joe. Coldplay have lots of money and they don't care if some nobody sues them I'd imagine.

Even though I really like Satriani's music, I've got to say I really hope he loses this. Nearly every chord progression and melody in the world has been used in more than one song.
