I am practising Lians new Power metal lesson and since i am a better rythm player i nailed the rythm pretty quick but i am having hard time with the solo. I cant really get my lead playing to sound good...

I recorded a video when i play it at 110 bpm(full speed 150)

Attached File  Video_60.wmv ( 4.47MB ) Number of downloads: 169

First of all, to play a good solo you need feeling.
I'd say 90% of feeling is a good bend and vibrato technique!

I think you should work on this.
Also, soundwise, your tone is very dry.

Try this eq: mid 10, bass 6, treble 6 - and put some reverb on (if you don't have delay.).
In this solo, reverb would prolly be better, as it is a non-melodic metal solo (meaning it's not ballad'ish.)

Try it and give some feedback!

First thing I zoned in on is that you had no feeling in your solo playing. Very stiff.
KJutte is absolutely correct.

1) You are not using a backing here. This has been my major criticism of the site, since forever, that full versions are not provided (except by O'Toole) that are naked play. They should provide a version like that along with the one with backing, that is just common sense. But nobody but one does it. It is difficult for really sound good without backing, because you really do have to sound good. Because that is not provided, it creates unrealistic expectations, and is confusing for people, it really is. Don't know why nobody but me seems to understand that.
2) Don't worry about speed. I have seen you here, and you are on your way to being a fine guitarist, I am sure of that, You need to focus on your vibrato more, you notes are not all in tune, you have to put somthing on them, get them all to sound sweet and in tune. Somehow, do something with them. Sometimes just a a little bend, or a tremolo action, just someting to make them all sound sweet. That is the only issue, some of your notes are a bit sour.

But don't take it wrong, you have musical talent, that is clear.

Superize, I think you did great, just need to relax a bit which will come in time. Also more work is needed on the vibratos in order to really make them wide and firm mate.

I agree on the tone vs backing thing, but I think it is important to play without a backing also to improve your tone.

Don't worry, it will always sound like that unless you either have a studio with a good cab mic infront of cab, or put guitar to computer like the rest of us.

yeah your rythmn is great dude! You've definitely got all the notes down on the solo, and thats the first part of the battle. I would just say work on giving the notes of the solo some more conviction, with vibrato, etc. Some times putting your all into it works too smile.gif But then you make funny faces XD feel the solo while your playing it smile.gif

The thing about being really stupid, is that there are a zillion ways to be a moron. There are usually several ways to be intelligent, given a situation, but it is a small finite number. But there are always a zillion ways to be to blithering idiot. So finding a new way to have the intellect of an artichoke is nothing to be proud of really, it is easy to do.

So true... To bad im still an artichoke haha
