I know I'm being highly generic but it's a little dissapointing to see only 2 or so pages of "full songs" listed in our 10k+ videos. Is there any way we can get a little more activity in the full-songs department?

This would be very cool but I think the instructors will have to pay the fine to the artists who made the song for using it or am I wrong?

Full songs doesn't have to be covers, you know, MrBlomme. They could be the instructors' own full songs smile.gif

I think he just means full songs in general. Like the ones in their currently. Full songs from the instructors own bands or solo projects. Like the KMC Metal songs.

covers would be pretty friggin sweet too, like clapton or something...why is it against copyright to teach people to play famous songs?

Full songs would be interesting but I think it would work if we divide it into couple of lessons.
Like lesson 1 - intro main riff
Lesson 2 - chorus
Lesson 3 - solo
Lesson 4 - outro or ending smile.gif

Hey all - didn't know that this thread would gain such support - cool stuff.

I think my main idea was that being able to play lessons that are 1-2 minutes long is cool - but it doesn't really feel like an accomplishment. Having full songs with riffs and a solo and chorus (and even those parts explained (why does this sound like a chorus as apposed to a bridge?) our subscribers would be able to better their composition knowledge base.

About royalties to songs: I think that GMC should put forth the effort and money to improve any way it can. So what if you have to pay some coin? The site has over 6000 subscribers eagerly waiting to play covers of Metallica and AC DC and KISS and all the like. I think that if the site were to advertise all of the songs that they covered to the public (moreso than we do now) then we would gain even /more/ subscribers and the site would continue to grow at an alarming rate.

Wouldn't it be great to actually get to enjoy being a "true" Guitar Hero - someone that can play songs accurately from a set-list at a moments notice? Isn't this at least /part/ of the reason why we started guitar?

Let's start here - create a library of songs for students to practice so that all of us may benefit from the music that's /already/ been published. No more ultimate-guitar tabs - but real lessons from real people!

Keep in mind that not all of the 6000 subscribers are paying subscribers. The number also includes past members who no longer frequent the site and previously paying customers who now only visit the forum but do not have access to the full lessons. I'm sure if all 6000 members of the forum were paying members Kris would look into if he has not already. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the instructors be able to do this. I get sick of trying to figure out how to play songs and even the books you can buy with tabs are sometimes too confusing. I just think it might be a bit expensive and I know that with the bandwidth this site uses, that it alone probably eats up a lot of the funds.

I'm very divided on this issue. One of the main points that made me join this site and abandoning a Swedish site with full songs is the fact that here at GMC I learn all the theory and the lessons are tailored around the theory with learning theory in mind.

On the other hand I love the full song lessons, but I think that I'd prefer to have it like we do now with Marcus Siepen and the other instructors explaining their own songs. I find this superior due to the fact that they know how they play the song and why and you can never get that with a cover. I would be extremely hard to get people like Dave Mustane, John Petrucci, Gary Moore etc to make lessons for GMC, but that would be truly epic, wouldn't it? smile.gif

well, I think GMC gives you the possibility to grow up as musician.
learn songs from bands could be useful, but on the other hand it could be bad for your creativity.
I mean, lessons here, are full of theory, licks, phrasing, different styles... they are not a little songs! so, when you start to create your own stuff you are able to use all this knowlegde.
when you learn a cover... you can´t use this material for you, you only can play it for fun.

it´s just what I think. smile.gif

I really like the GMC Idea ... Creating original guitarists ... evolve towards your interest area.. I use guitar pro for full known songs I'd like to learn... But to get the technique and feel I practice at GMC

Extremelt well said!!

And I think there's a huge benefit learning from the lessons we have here today. Know the differet tecnhiques, patterns, scales etc and you'll be able to analyze and nail that cover on your own.
These lessons are preparation for becoming a skilled musician. The lessons learned you can find out how to vary them and use them in your playing and create new things.
Learning a cover note for note is only copying what's already been done. You can use the riff from Sweet home Alabama in your own songs, and it's really difficult to change it and apply it in your own playing.

Covers can be fun to learn and play, no doubt about it, but the achivement of managing it without tabulature or watching a video is a lot greater. That means you know your way around creating music rather than copying it. smile.gif

I wasn't saying we should eliminate the way GMC does things now - at all. I was just saying that it would be fun to ADD the full-song component to the site. I was saying that the site has enough room to grow and allow these kinds of lessons.

And if we have these lessons regardless of what some say, it will definitely help with the ability to make our own songs by demonstrating songs that have already been created.

As for the guitar pro idea - sure guitar pro helps, by so do video lessons that cut each of the song parts into pieces and allow for conversation /about/ the theory of the song and the key and the different mechanics that allowed the song to become popular in the first place.

For now it is not possible to cover songs from record label artist cause the amount of money you would have to pay for the labels to acquire the copyrights is I think huge. But some lessons of songwriting would indeed be cool and I agree mate. I'll try to do one for starters in the next month.

So if Kristofer can do it on his old website - why can't we make lessons like these on this site?

Exactly as Lian said:
I was playing covers for quite a long time... and it brought me literally nothing. Now, after only 3 weeks here at GMC I'm almost done with my first own song. You see the difference? smile.gif
Of course, some full songs would be nice, but you can grab just tablatures from somewhere and learn it by yourself smile.gif
