The marks are wood structure, they were there before! The lemon oil just darkened the wood arround them, making the white spots stand out more...

In addition to Zakks post, either lemon oil or dirt have cought up in the rosewood grains. Try to really wipe out those grains using soft dumped cloth and using circular motions.

Well, that's the curse of a rosewood fretboard. After playing over an ebony or a maple covered one - you consider to change to neck on all your guitars. But Ivan's solution could be useful I'm gonna try that too.

ofc I was exaggerating! I have two guitars, both with rosewood fretboard and I just have to deal with the characteristics of the material

i understand, fretboard material is not something i have ever really given any serious thouth to until now, researching this topic and trying to find a fix has been dizzying

Sorry I meant dampened cloth like the cloth that is a bit wet (with hot water) rather than being soaked.

Sounds like your frets got a lot of dust and dirt on them. It happens a lot when you don't frequently change strings and take care of fretboard. It also helps if you wash your hands always before you play guitar as any dirt of your fingers will get on strings and go into frets.

Gotcha, i had originally thought that you meant some special type of guitar cloth. there seems to be so many types of cleaning aid or product that some guy in a guitar store will quite happily see you part with yet more cash. i will give your advice a go and let you know how i get on.

thanks

you are quite right, this particular guitar had been at my freinds house in a case for about 12 years. he has given it t me on a long term loan as he would rather see some one use it than keep it in storage (he is a bass player) so i have happily obliged him. in hindsight i dont think i cleaned the fret board properly before applying the lem-oil and also didnt check the wood type, afterall the guy in the guitar shop did mumble something about not using on rose wood. ih well one lesson more learned.

Lemon Oil is designed for use on Dark Wood Fingerboards Like Rosewood or Ebony!!
DON'T use it on Maple Boards though!!!
Sounds like the Guy in the Shop was mumbling because he didn't know what he was talking about!!! smile.gif wink.gif

I've been using GHS fast fret and Gerlitz GGH Guitar Honey Fingerboard Treatment... i've used the fast fret for strings and the honey as a test for the fretboard... i had similar whitemarks (not as much, just here and there) and the combo of these two seem to do the trick... i think mainly the GGH product.. as i wiped it down clean with it.... in addition i used a microfiber cloth to clean it.
