A week ago I thought this would be... not possible or inpossible... sorry

But.. Tadaaa... Luke style, 65 BPM, with some little errors. I'll keep practice this lesson because I love it, and because I need to improve my bending and accuracy, but I think it still sounds ok. And Monte, I really want to thank you, because one way or another, you got me to this higher level of soloing in a week xD I did lvl4 lessons, few lvl5.. and now lvl6

Just thought I'd pop in and say great job on the Luke lesson Kaz, and I am loving all this beautiful theory flowing backwards and forwards - great job Monty!

Awesome Kaz!! I liked it A LOT. But...I'm gonna make you get the Kaz-Box out and tighten/polish up those faster runs. You can do it man!! That was and AWESOME TAKE. Now take it to an even higher level!!

Little question, the second run in the Luke lesson includes a little pull-of part (legato), but the part afterwards is done with AP. Can I do this with Legato as well, or do I have to stick to the lesson as Muris plays it? Legato is easier xD.

Totally up to you Kaz. I do this all the time, although I am trying now to develop my AP so that I don't have to, but until then go ahead. Just work on your AP as well so you can eventually play it as written. It will change the sound of it tho.

So here is kind of like your final exam on all the stuff we have been working on. Let's look at our "D Lydian" chord progression for our collab this month:

D-D-E-E

So take each chord and tell me the following:

Diatonic scale options for soloing.


Pentatonic scale options for soloing.


Triad options for soloing.

D: Diatonic: for a lydian feel.. I'd say either D Lydian or A Ionian.
for pentatonic scales... I'd say Dmaj is always right. Bmin should work aswell, just as B blues.
And triads.. Well all Dmaj triads would work here! (this goes to easy... am I forgetting somehting?)

E: Diatonic, if you want to just stay in key, you can still use D Lydian or A Ionian, but if you want to really feel the Emaj sound, then you should go for E Lydian, or B Ionian.
As for pentatonics, again, you could just use the Dmaj/Bmin pentatonic, but to go really into the Emaj feel, you should use an Emaj pentatonic scale, or the C#min pentatonic/blues scale. As for triads... Use the A maj triads you gave us and push them up exactly 7 frets to get the Emaj triads. you can use them as well.

I believe I'm forgetting something.. Let's peek at some other threads
After peeking in Jer's thread, I believe he's right with the triads, so you can alos use the Bmin triad (for E) or the Bmin triad.(for the D chord). I think Jer has some prety complicated lists of options.. but I think mine will do it

Good Job Kaz. I want you to take a look at this lick from the Phrygian lesson you are working on and see if you can't tell what Muris is doing here. So you don't go all Opeth.db on us.. ......I'm gonna give you a little hint. Look at the chord that the lick is being played over and see if there is a relationship between the notes being played and the lick. If you get stuck go to the Lydian thread and see how Jer broke down the Lydian Lick 5 for us. Thanks Kaz!!

Well... All these notes are in Cm pentatonic, all but the c#, which is the 14th fret B string.

UPDATE and that C# note sits in the C phrygian mode.

UPDATE: I keep updating so.. I read Jer's thread.... Cmin has C Eb G. The notes used in the first lick are G, Eb and then he goes down and up again using C and G again. So.. he uses only three notes, all in the chord Then gues what.. I predict he does the same in the second lick... Let's see:
He uses G, Eb and F for the first part. Now F is not in the Cm chord but....it is in C Aeolian (minro) and phrygian. then he uses C#, C and Bb. C is the key, so that's a logical chose. C# is a bit akward because... It's not in the phrygian C, but then I fooled myself, because Db is in there.. and that's the same xD Db is in phrygian mode, but not in the aeolian, so this note makes it very phrygian.
Bb fits in the Aeolian mode and in the Phrygian mode, so it just fits!

That's how it makes sense... Muris either knows his theory, or he just has a very very good ear...

Good job KAZ!!! My point in making you do this is to show you that triads can really help your solos sound melodic. Also, when you compose your own solos, like in our collab this month, I want you to be aware of what chords you are playing over and try to play something that will fit nicely.

So Kaz....Here is where I think we are with you:

Scales and triads:
Keep working on these. Use them as warm up excercised etc.

Kaz-box excercises:
1 down and 1 to go. Good job!!

Luke lesson:
I'd still like to see you clean up those couple of fast runs. Keep working on this.

Phrygian lesson:
Have you posted a take on this? If not try and do it ASAP. Is there any way you could do a video of this? would be nice to see your technique.

Monthly solo:
Pick a backing track you would like to solo over. I want you to put the scales and triads you have learned to use. You could use either the phrygian or lydian backing by Muris or you could create your own. Let me know what you want to do here.


Overall Kaz I think you are doing extremely well. Good job!!

One thing I would like to see you do is get a regimented practice routine with regards to technique. If you are interested in this let me know. It doesn't have to be time consuming.....just consistent.

Good job Kaz...I think you could be really good if you work hard. You are young and that helps!!
