It's probably about agility and not the strength, yeah.
You should train it by playing more legato exercises using both ring finger AND pinky, ring finger is kind a attached to pinky and it needs extra time to gain more "independency". -------------------- Youtube

I tried the same table-finger-lifting thing, and I guess I have the same issue, although it lifts up more than a centimetre... Just follow Muris' advice, you just need to train your fingers, and everything should be fine !

I writed these kind of stuff when i got bored the 'devils finger' as Paganini call it. Lock the ring finger some position and play all sides of it. Try to keep the ring finger relaxed as possible. To develope independency of you fingers you can check also Steve Morse's stuff. I have all kind of lessons for fingers but they are in my head:)
Make your own etudes this way and a vot!(?) E||-----------------------||---------------------------| B||-----------------------||---------------------------| G||------------------(8)--||*--L--L--L--L--L--L--L--L--| D||-----------------------||*--------------5-----------| A||-----------------------||---7--6--7--9-----7--9--6--| E||-----------------------||---------------------------| ---------------------------------||---------------7------------| -----------------------L---------||---------7--8-----10--8--7--| --L--L--L--L--L--L--L-----L--L--*||*--8--9--L--L--L---L--L--L--| --7-----5-----7-----7--5--------*||*---------------------------| -----9-----7-----9--------9--7---||----------------------------| ---------------------------------||----------------------------| --10--8--7---------7--8--7---|| ------------8--10------------|| ---L--L--L--L---L--L--L--L--*|| ----------------------------*|| -----------------------------|| -----------------------------|| I don't know if this one has any sense but try this kind off stuff. To me they had helped both strength an independency. And my opinion is that the exercises is best to do with guitar by playing it. I know why the ring finger is weaker then then the others but i can't explain it in English. But check this: http://books.google.fi/books?id=96jG5n-vmP...lt&resnum=1 OK? Hei, and these kind of also: |---3--| |---3--| |---3--| |---3--| ||--------------------------------------------|| ||--------------------------------------------|| ||*------------9-----------------------------*|| ||*--------------------------------9---------*|| ||---7--9--10-----10--9--7--9--10-----10--9---|| ||--------------------------------------------|| |--3--| |--3--| |--3--| |--3--| ----------------------------------------|| ----------------------------------------|| *-----------8-----------------8--------*|| *--------------7-----------------7-----*|| ---6--7--9--------9--6--7--9--------9---|| ----------------------------------------|| Play till your hand is numb and rest and then play till your hand is numb and rest and then... Ups, i forgot the dominant from the last one:)...drool This post has been edited by oikonen: Jul 24 2009, 07:40 PM -------------------- Blue Steel - Wiggle your big toe - |

I think speed is much more about coordination than strength. Actually I am trying to be more soft on the guitar to increase my speed. I kind of fret too hard, maybe because I come from being an acoustic guitar player.
I discovered that using too much strength on fretting was one of the reasons I was so noisy when trying to play fast!!! Actually, about strength, the ring finger is the one I found most strong for bending strings. (and I broke mine a couple of years ago... So your injuries should be no problem with proper rest/ recuperation. ) This post has been edited by Gus: Jul 24 2009, 01:07 PM -------------------- my "Thank you GMC!" video

do u got video somewhere how you play this paganiny exeriszes??? i'm not 100% sure how to play this shame on me Lot of time the L note{death i belive made me trouble you say i have to play everything by slide} so i not sure where u mean a i have to lock my ring and where go the rest Heh, Paganini never 'practice' as he claimed when asked at competition in Germany (this is OlliEnglish). It's Em harm but pick what ever you want, try Phrygian - that's really fun when you have to shift your ring finger when in 5 and 6, that i call exercice... The 'L' means legato but in here it doesn't, it means that you keep your ring finger in that position (well as a matter in fact - it is legato but i did'nt wrote the last note:)... I don't use tablatures very often so i did it in this way. You can also copy the example and import to it in ASCII to gp5, i have to bought that one as well (i use Sibelius mainly but now i start to use GP). I try to do some video but my computer is so sloowww (1.7G) and i haven't used the cheap (10€) webcam that i bought a while ago but i try. Here is the how to play, i realize that i have practice myself too.."little" rusty. Sorry about the bad video and bad playing but i just woke up... After i 'm fully awake i do better video, have do little research how to achieve better pic quality and sound. I made good experiences with that finger trainer. It has really strengthened my pinky. Of course you should prefer training your fingers with exercises on your guitar because it is not only a lack of strength in your fingers that you can't play precisely and fast enough as you liked (Just as Muris said). But I use this little helper whenever my guitar is out of reach when studying or reading books etc...and it really helped me so far. But you should defintely also check out Daniel's Series of great finger exercises for finger-dexterity and independence etc.. This post has been edited by Nighthawk1: Jul 25 2009, 01:12 PM |
