i think i need a new computer and im thinking of going apple
can you list some of the advatages and disadvantages? the main reason i want to go from pc to mac is because i understand the system is much more resistand to viruses and that there are a lot less viruses programmed for macs
Not too sure how helpful I can be but I'll give it a go.
As far as Macs go, they are a little more secure by default but personally, I've never had any virus/malware problems with Windows systems at home (Windows 3.1 through Vista). If you're careful and keep up with hotfixes, running Windows isn't that bad. I'd recommend something like McAfee's or Symantec's security suite for firewalling and malware scanning.
My main system is an old Mac Powerbook. I run antivirus and the firewall on that too. There are mac viruses and mac malware apps out there. The're less common, but it's not a good reason to call your system 'secure'.
I switched to a mac at home because I got tired of tinkering aroudn with the OS and software like I was doing on Windows and Linux at the time. With Windows you have to worry about driver incompatibilities and Linux you have to worry about whether a driver exists for the device at all. I didn't want to have to mess with it anymore. Mostly I've been satisfied.
One of the nice things about macs on the music/audio side is that pretty much all of the drivers are low latency drivers. On Windows you have to worry about which drivers you're using for a particular piece of hardware.
Sometimes on a mac you still have to worry about device compatibility. I found out too late that the QuickCamPro 9000 doesn't have drivers/software for Mac. That sucked.
I'm probably coming up on a system upgrade soon. I'll be getting another Mac. I like how, once you set your system up, it stays out of your way. To me it seems like there's less fighting and digging on a Mac when you're just trying to get something done.
But I don't think at this point that there's any inherent superiority of one or the other anymore. Knowing what you want and why helps make the decision. If you have $500, you're getting a Windows laptop. If you need firewire on a laptop, you're probably getting a Mac.
