It's so difficult! I like many singers. I could name two that I liked when I was starting to play the guitar: Axl Rose (when he was younger) and Steven Tyler. The are/were great singers and excelent frontman. I also would like to have the voice of Nickelback's singer.
Finally I would like to name Trent Reznor. He's is not a brilliant singer but I enjoy his voice very much. I think that it fits perfect in his music.

I'd like to sing like James Hetfield did back in the day, and I agree with all of Gabriel's choices.

James Hetfield all the way! He's the one I identify my voice with, although my voice is far from that!

I would also like to sing like Axl Rose back in the good days,

Speaking of Queen - Freddy Mercury as you said before - wow. Amazing voice. one of if not the best pop vocal of the 20th century

also - Jason Mraz - excellent voice

Dennis De Young (STYX) - also excellent voice

I'm surprised to see so many Hetfields. Sure don't get me wrong, I love old metallica, but I never thought he was a "good singer". Now he sounds like he could sing for lynyrd skynyrd. Ever notice how he ends everything in an "Uh" ? "For whom the bell tolls-UH"

But if you listen to his voice in some of their slow songs like...Nothing Else Matters or Fade to Black, he really had a great voice.

Remember luciana's first post in this topic: "that's the interpretation? or the words he used in his song? or the melody so nice?" I didn't voted Hetfield but I think that he has became a good singer, with an unique voice and great interpretations. Maybe he don't have a brilliant voice or technique but it fits perfect with his music and lyrycs. I belive him when he's is singing and that makes a great singer for me. There are a lot of singers with an incredible voice and technique that are too cold (lack feeling when they are singing) for me.

You're right Gabe. He is a lyrical mastermind and does have a unique style. I don't want people to think I don't like him for that. Hell, when I sing I still accidently pruduce sounds like his. haha

Surprised indeed. The only reason I dont like metallica is becuase of the vocals. I'm not saying he is a bad singer, but I personally cant stand it.

Been working on the Matthew Bellamy voice for 7 years... Next stop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6wSyIdwCFM

... if I were a girl.

Just kidding wink.gif Glad I'm not her boyfriend if she gets pissed off...

I try to avoid "locking" my ideas of a good voice on one particular singer. If I think the feel of the music requires it (as I often think when it comes to Muse), when doing covers, I'll try to go for the same style of phrasing and timbre/tone, without emulating a specific version of the song. If I don't feel it will detract from the music, I'll use "my own" voice, although the phrasings and tone do creep in sometimes smile.gif

Bellamy has a good voice. I also love Thom Yorke. Of course, I'm pretty sure Kelly Jones, Matt Bellamy and Thom Yorke all hate each others guts, but that's okay tongue.gif

Let me respond with a singer that most of you probably have never heard of:

John Cowan

I have seen him sing so many times over 25 years and I still get chills from this guy. Look for him on Youtube, etc. and he is just amazing. I have seen none like him with more tone, vibrato and just a range that I would die for!

Hearing him on records is nothing like seeing him live. If he ever comes touring in your town, do yourself a favor and go see him. By the way, he's an incredible bass player too. Read his bio.

Hehe, yeah, at least Jones and Bellamy aren't talking, I'd think smile.gif But I agree on those three - and then let me just add Mercury into the bunch - skipped him because he's already been mentioned so much smile.gif

in no particular order here....

Bruce Dickinson
Sebastian Bach
Geoff Tate
Rob Halford

+1 for Dickinson and Tate. They're the masters of that particular form of "operatic metal" singing.

I've also enjoyed Matt Bellamys vocals on the last couple of Muse albums.
