Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a new axe lately, and I keep hearing about these wonderful thin Ibanez prestige necks, so I might give them a try smile.gif (But I know nothing about Ibanez!)

One question: the "prestige" trademark refers to the neck or to the whole guitar? I understand these are the best Ibanez models, and I want this guitar to be a keeper.

But I took a look at Ibanez site and there are so many models that I get lost... so many numbers and letters, I don't know which are the ones I have to look for.

This is what I'm looking for:

- Fixed bridge (I bet that narrows the choice!)
- Slim neck (prestige series?)
- Low action with absolutely no fret buzz in any fret position
- Strat looks
- Good quality pickups H-S-H if possible.

Those above are a must.
As for the rest, the cooler looking the better smile.gif , I don't have any preferences for wood type.

The reason I try to avoid locking trems is that I need to change tunings fast and easy.

Is there any Ibanez or maybe Jackson that meets all these requirements?

That one isn't strat shaped sad.gif

I've been searching and searching ibanez site and I only see a couple:

PGM401 and RGA 321

I can't find prices though. There are some ibanez models in my local shop and I don't find any of them listed at their site. These Ibanez guitar names are so confusing. I'm used to "tele or strat" "sg or LP" laugh.gif

RGA 321 like you said.
A great guitar with a fast neck and great action (if set up right)
Only two humbuckers, no middle singlecoil. Also you might wanna swap the stock pickups as they aren't too good...

I believe there was some S series with HSH and a fixed bridge but I can't find it, maybe it's no longer produced.

Does it have to be an Ibanez? There are plenty of high quality, strat shaped, thin necked shredding machines by other companies!

Hi Fran,
I have just bought the Ibanez prestige rg2550mz-GW with the new trem Zero thing. I have always been a strat type man but I am very impressed with it after having it now for over a week. It took a while for me to get used to a different Tremelo system etc but now I'm liking it more every day. At the moment it has standard IBZ pickups which sound fine but I have ordered some Evolutions on some advice I received on this site to give it more character.
Originally I wanted the Jem 7v-wh but agonising over the price was keeping me awake nights so on great advice from here I was told...buy a prestige and fit Evo's and it will sound more or less the same.
Now its set up the neck action is to die for I've had some guitars over the years but this neck is quite amazing. I got the guitar new for £700 and the Evo's (Full set for £250) a total of £950 where as the Steve Vai 7v-wh was over twice as much. Ok to some people including me £950 is expensive but I honestly believe I have value for money after trying a number of Ibanez and Jackson types.
When I get the Evo's fitted this week I will post a thread for persons interested in the difference between the IBZ's and Evo's in my humble opinion.
Anyway I hope you find what you want, I have never bought a guitar before without trying it first, but I decided to trust the advice of the members on here and took a chance. Its turned out fine.
Good luck Tony

Just wait for Marc_Maiden to show up tongue.gif haha.

You might want to skip the pickups specs, then just get a new Seymour Duncan or Dimarzio set wink.gif

No, it doesn't really have to be Ibanez, I'm open to suggestions smile.gif

RG2550 seems good, but it has a trem, I'm looking for a fixed bridge. I might need to change tunings often, and I hear locking trems are a pain to set-up & change tunings.

Looking forward to that review smile.gif

There are some Jacksons that come quite close to your specs:

http://www.thomann.de/de/jackson_dk2t_trd_dinky_upgrade.htm
Slim Neck, Original Seymour Duncan Pickups,24 frets, string through bridge

http://www.thomann.de/de/jackson_slsmgwh_w_case.htm
There is Trond Vold's guitar, the soloist SLSMG with similiar specs.

If you got some more money to spend you can get a Jackson USA soloist with HH,HSS or HSH combination and a fixed bridge, though they might be hard to get as Jackson has long delivery times...

This ESP would also be quite close (Zsolts guitar witout a floyd)

Wow that ESP looks great.

I thought about the Jackson soloist you mention, but I'm a bit unsure about the volume pot placement. It seems to be a bit too close to the picking hand. I've heard some people complain about that on that guitar, whicjh seems awesome nevertheless.

It seems like the ESP has that pot placed in a similar place. I definitely would have to try them first, speciually to check the neck & fret buzz. That's a problem too, I would be afraid to order a guitar (through my local shop) without trying it first...

Well, I know less about Ibanez than you, Fran. In a fixed bridge, thin neck, premium strat type guitar, you might consider the Jackson SL2HT Soloist. Now, it's HH. I've personally never seen a HSH Jackson, but I'm sure they are out there. This guitar is neck through with string through and should sustain while you get yourself something to eat...come back and it's still wailing. Just a thought. FYI, the Dinky's are bolt on necks, the Soloists are neck through body. If that matters to you. And, they of course come in a variety of finishes.

Neck through? Nice!
As I said above, Jackson soloists are nice. Is there much difference between between SL2HT and SLSMG?

Fran, I found an interesting discussion on that very question: http://www.jcfonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64434 I didn't get too deep into it, but one of the responders has both Jacksons.

For me, I like passive better than active, and I'm a huge fan of the traditional Jackson headstock. So I lean to the SL2HT Soloist. FYI, I have an SL3 Soloist and a DK2 Dinky. The Dinky is featherlite, the Soloist is a sidewalk block, weight wise. The Dinky is bolt on, the Soloist is neck through. Both of mine have Floyd's.

The mention of Schecter is interesting. I have a C-1 Blackjack that is HH with fixed bridge, 24 jumbo's. It's a very nice player indeed and I believe Schecter's are a real bargain in the set neck world of guitars.

You don't have to worry about Fret buzz on those high quality guitars Fran!

Unless the guitar has a production flaw, you can set the action extremely low without getting any buzz on a higher quality guitar (IF the guitar is set up properly!).

Almost all of these Shred-Superstrats come with very thin necks, Ibanez has the thinnest necks but that doesn't mean they are the most comfortable or fast necks...

hey fran, the pgm you were looking at will have a different neck then a prestige..it is slightly thicker because it is paul gilberts signature however it is an extremely quality guitar

the rga 321 is also an extremely good guitar, however the difference between the other rga prestiges is mostly the paint job so if you wanted the same guitar in a natural finish, you would be paying a lot less for the rga 121 but you get the same guitar interms of playability and sound.

ibanez does not offer much for fixed bridge guitars which is sad because i would love one:)

maybe you could try else where, the only other fixed ibanez's i know of are:

the new fixed bridge JEM

USA Customs from soemtime ago (you would have to buy used...usually 700-1000 USD

I might get a good deal on a RGA321F (Last year's model)
This one features Dimarzio/ibz pups instead of the ibanez actives of this year' edition.

Are these Dimarzio/ibz pups any good?

I suspected that.

Maybe a set of active EMGs would suit these guitars better?
