Yes it would be confusing, unless like they do on Ebay, it has your username, and for about a month there is an icon next to the name, when hovered over it says this user has recently changed display name.

Also maybe you could limit each person to one display name change total. When viewing profile you can find what user's name used to be.

But that ^ looks to me like a bit of effort. Maybe it isnt, not sure. I don't no the first thing about coding or forums. But that would be one way of doing it to avoid confusion.
