Welcome to the second month of MTP! smile.gif
This month we will focus on improvisation and grooving!

Weekly assignment 1:

Improvisation - roots and 5ths

Lesson to practice: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...bass-concept-1/

Goal : To learn the concept of improvising a walking bass line using roots and 5ths as a note choice in a 2 feel type of line.

Purpose : Develop improvising skills that will help you create more interesting bass lines. Be able to "jam" to any chord progression.

Instructions :

First check out the lesson and learn it by heart. Make sure you understand the concept behind this kind of improvisation. You want to use only roots and 5ths as your note choice. Make sure you follow the chord progression so that you connect what is being played with the chords in backing - that is very important. Walking bass line will be 2 feel - that means 2 half notes per bar. Try to get in that kind of groove and keep time well. Once you learn the lesson, start practicing your OWN improvisation over the same backing track. I want you to spend at least 2 hours during the week just practicing your own improvising over the backing. When improvising I want you to play the backing and look at the printed chord staff (progression on paper) and by following chords - choose appropriate roots and 5ths for improvising.

Requirements :

Post updates on your practice daily if possible, describing what have you done. I want you to record in VIDEO (or audio only if you can't make it) your OWN roots and 5ths improvisation over the same backing. Feel free to tab and submit a GTP file of your improvisation if you want as an addition too but its not mandatory (it will be a good exercise for you to visualize the intervals and bass line improvisation/movement)... I will attach the backing track in a day or two, which you will be using to record your own improvisation during the weekend!

Deadline to complete: 11th of January

You need to learn the concept of the lesson and that is in short - using roots and perfect 5ths for improvising your walking bass line. This lesson shows you how to play 2 feel - meaning two full half notes per each bar. What you need to do is be aware where your roots and perfect 5ths are (and which notes they are) for each chord you improvise over. By practicing lesson you will learn shapes where to find those two notes on the fretboard (in relation to the root note).

How to approach improvising?

Follow this progression:

Am - G - C - D - Em - Am - Em - Bm - G - Am

Each chord is played for two bars!
So when improvising remember to stay on roots and 5ths of each chord for two bars.

For start, outline each chord change by playing its root note first and then going for the 5th or root in octave higher position etc.

In practice, when you see the Am chord you can use chords roots and 5th for improvisation - that means notes : A and E only! Those are only two notes but you can find them in different positions on the neck to create diversity. Play around those two notes for 2 bars and then you have the next chord G major. For that chord you have notes G and D available. Since its a chord change, play the note G first and then go for 5th(remember the intervals lesson we covered?!). Chord name will tell you the root note (C major - note C is the root, D major - note D is the root etc). Once you find the root, you can find other intervals from there (we covered that in intervals lesson and you did good there).

To make things simple, since its a 2 feel walking bass line - you will only play full half notes (2 notes per bar/measure).

You can if you want compose first the bass line in the guitar pro using these ideas and chord progression and then learn it on bass.

Whole point of the lesson is to be able to just look at the chords progression and jam along and improvise the line using only two different notes - roots and 5ths.

I would love to see a video of this recording, but audio will do the job too.

Tell me if you need any more help.

Well, first tip will be if you know the lesson by heart to play while looking at the chord progression I posted above to see how they relate to what you are playing.

Here are some tips how to start with improvisation (everything is played in half notes as in the lesson):

By following chords progression play:

- only root notes
- root - perfect 5th - root perfect 5th and so on
- once you complete the step two you are already improvising so in this step you can try playing roots in different positions on the neck for example if your root is note A, play it on 7th fret D string instead 5th fret E string etc. Same goes with 5ths, try to vary their position.

Once you learn the shapes and patterns - root root - 5th or root 5th or root 5th 5th root etc it will work for you just try it.

Are you able to locate roots for chords by looking at the written progression (in advance) and preparing yourself where the next one will be?

I would like you to try to improvise as this concept isn't hard but if you really feels you really can't - then record the lesson as it is as an assignment...

Hmm, you are not hitting the appropriate root notes. If a chord in backing is A minor you need to play the root note A first. If its G major - root note is G etc...

Lets take a look at the chord progression. I will start improv for you and you can finish it ok?

A minor chord here..................... G major here.........
G||--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|
D||-----------7--------|--------------------|--------------------|
A||--------------------|--7-----------------|--------------------|
E||--5-----------------|-----------5--------|--3--------3--------|
root root 5th root root root

G major.............C major here..............................
--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|
--------------------|--------------------|-----------5--------|
--5--------5--------|--3-----------------|--3-----------------|
--------------------|-----------3--------|--------------------|
5th 5th root 5th root 5th

D major here.............................E minor here.........
--------------------|--?-----------------|--------------------|
-----------?--------|--------------------|--------------------|
--5-----------------|-----------?--------|--7---------?-------|
--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|
root 5th root root root root

E minor.............A minor here...............................
--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|
--9-----------------|--------------------|--7-----------------|
-----------?--------|-----------?--------|-----------7--------|
--------------------|--5-----------------|--------------------|
5th root root 5th root 5th

E minor here.............................B minor here.........
--------------------|--?-----------------|----------11--------|
-----------9--------|--------------------|--9-----------------|
--7-----------------|-----------?--------|--------------------|
--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|
root 5th root root root 5th

B minor here........G major here..............................
----------11--------|--------------------|--------------------|
--9-----------------|----------??--------|--------------------|
--------------------|-10-----------------|-10-----------------|
--------------------|--------------------|----------10--------|
root 5th root 5th root 5th

A minor.............
-------------------||
-------------------||
-12----------------||
-------------------||
root

As you can see you are using only two different notes per each chord - root and 5th!

Complete the rest of the tab where " ? " is indicated and then you can record your take...Please try to do it fast so that you don't fall behind with mtp and we can do the next assignment smile.gif

Great take man, you really did this well! You have got a good feeling for 2 feel walking bass! Please study more concepts about improvising that were covered in the lesson and which you had problems with (making your own improv).

HERE IS YOUR MTP REC LESSON FOR JANUARY: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/country-style/

Weekly assignment 2:

Major triads

Lesson to practice: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-lessons/basic-bass-line-building-blocks-major-triads/

Goal :
To learn the notes of major triads and their shapes/position on bass fretboard!

Purpose : Learning about triads is essential since those are your strong notes when supporting chords and you will primarily use them when constructing bass lines!

Instructions :

First check out the lesson and learn it by heart. Make sure you understand about triads and how they are built! That is very important. By learning lesson you will also learn common shapes on bass for major triads.

Requirements :

Post updates on your practice daily if possible, describing what have you done. I want you to record in VIDEO (or audio only if you can't make it) your performance of the lesson. I will attach the backing track once you need it (just ask here once you're ready to record)!

Deadline to complete: 18th of January

Since you fell behind with the last assignment, try to finish this one over the weekend (till Monday).

Let me know if you have any questions!
