Hi Mirko!

How was your new year's?

Let's get started with January's program!

These are the three assignments for this month:

* First week: Due January 10th

- Post rhythm exercise no.1. We are still gonna drill the 2/4 time signature, this time is going to be a little more demanding. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.

- Post riff assignment. This is the main riff for the song "Mr. Brownstone" by Guns and Roses. It's a great exercise and it's got some interesting mixture of techniques in it. Mr. Brownstone the riff appears at 3:17 as in the GP file.

- Post speed exercise no.1. Start from a comfortable speed. All alternate picking starting on a down stroke. This is a must-know type of pattern to develop speed. Go up to the fastest and cleanest speed possible and post it.

Attached File  week_1___Rhythm_exercise_no.1.gp5 ( 2.12K ) Number of downloads: 191

Attached File  week_1___Riff_assignment_No.1.gp5 ( 17.47K ) Number of downloads: 158

Attached File  week_1___Speed_assigment_No.1.gp5 ( 2.06K ) Number of downloads: 182

* Second week: Due January 17th

- Post rhythm exercise no.2. For this exercise start at 60bpm. And work your way up. The goal is 160, but post your fastest possible take at the time. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.

- Post solo assignment no.1. We'll keep on working on the bendings. This time let's do the first solo for "November Rain" by Slash. Play the "guitar solo" part on the GP file attached. November Rain backing track The solo part appears at 3:48.

- Post speed exercise no.2. This exercise has some different patterns in it and it's not square. Do it with alternate picking but don't be restricted to it if you need to use a couple of hammer-ons or pull-offs.

Attached File  week_2___Rhythm_exercise_no.2.gp5 ( 2.01K ) Number of downloads: 166

Attached File  week_2___Solo_assignment_no.1.gp5 ( 31.56K ) Number of downloads: 153

Attached File  week_2___Speed_assigment_no.2.gp5 ( 1.86K ) Number of downloads: 167

* Third week: Due January 24th

- Post Rhythm exercise no.3. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.

- Post solo assignment no.2. This is a really fun excerpt from "Mr. Browstone" solo. Challenging but I think it will really help on your bending technique.

- Post speed exercise no.3. The idea here is to break the regular up and down patterns and start combining different runs "arbitrarily". A chromatic exercise. Start on a comfortable tempo and work your way up to the fastest and cleanest possible.

Attached File  week_3___Rhythm_exercise_no.3.gp5 ( 2.13K ) Number of downloads: 174

Attached File  week_3___Speed_assigment_no.3.gp5 ( 2.64K ) Number of downloads: 179

Attached File  week_3__Solo_assignment_No.2.gp5 ( 17.47K ) Number of downloads: 143

* Let me know of the REC lesson you want to submit for this month. The REC take would have to be posted on the 29th on january.

Let me know iif you have any comments and questions!

hey, nice assignments, its fun to practice that stuff! gnr is great every time, i never played that song before, really cool!

im waiting for the day you catch a song that i can play already! *g*

i would like to do the Vintage Rock Solo from Jonathan! i played that a little bit the last days already, it has some cool bends in it and it sounds really awesome! i love that tune! the only problem is the fast run in the end, thats impossible fast for me now, im not sure if i can play that in 3 weeks, maybe i have to create another end for my take a little bit slower stuff, but i really would like to practice that , so maybe im fast enough then!

I think you'll get it by the end of the month. It's a pentatonic run so make sure you hold your index finger strongly to it's position so you can move your others fingers freely. Sounds really cool.

hey daniel, im thinking about that coment from emir to my last lesson:

"When you vibrate while in the bend you should still vibrate from the wrist. You're moving your whole hand and the result is not really a good vibrato"

i have really problems doing vibrato while bending, and i dont know how to do that. i dont understand emirs coment, when i do vibrato from the wrist i have to moving my whole hand havent i? Maybe you can explain it for me or you can you can show me that in the next videochat!

second thing is the riff-assigment: the second part on the 4. til 7. fret is very fast! i tried to play that with 4 fingers, but then i recognized that it feels more comfortable to play it qwithout the pinky.
now im on 80% speed to the song and it doesnt feel very good anymore because i have to chance the frets very fast! what is the better way there? should i play it with 4 fingers or only 3?

On the riff assignment, use a pull-off technique, well, this is better to show than to explain, but anyway I don't the think 4 fingers are used here, only 3

about the vibrato, I think it is important to use the rist when doing vibrato and not only your fingers vertically if you know what I mean. Don't think it over too much. Take a look at the way Emir does it for instance on his lessons. He is moving the whole rist. It's kind of like pulling the strings on a downward fashion.

Thanks for that video!

I see what you mean now,

I would go with three fingers! You have two notes on the same fret on adjacent strings (7th fret) so you would use middle and ring for those two,

I don't my guitar right now because I left it for mainteinance, but I would bet it's played with four fingers,

Check 3:29 for the main riff: (This can also guide you for part you are asking for, because I think you'd use similar fingering)

I meant: I bet it would be played with three fingers biggrin.gif

sorry about that,

This type of riffs would be played with three fingers by Slash, probably someone like Paul Gilbert would play it with four, but I think that makes a little more complicated and unnecessary,

Hi Mirko! thanks for the videos! quality is fine, I can see and hear what you are doing,

On that exercise, YOU HAVE TO maintain alternate picking the whole time. Beware of that, because I saw you changing a little bit. Also maintain the same length in the notes as you started. At the beginning they are right, but then it went off.

Keep on playing it at that speed until you get it right from start to finish at least once, and then you can raise the tempo 10 bpms. Set a goal tempo and WORK TOWARDS IT!

nice pinch harmonic! smile.gif

how did you lower the speed of the track?

Nice work on that riff! I think if you play it at regular speed it will sound a little more natural.

I see that you finally did that repeated part with three fingers, it's good.

one thing again: Tune the guitar! take the two mins to get it in tune. biggrin.gif I know this seems basic but once you start recording your own stuff or play live you'll have that habit of not tuning it and that's gonna give you some trouble, so...do it.

???????? never heared about that... there is a button to press... tomorrow i will do a vieo to show you the new speed assignment, im not sure if im playing it right, then i show you the funktion on my laptop, i think thats much easier then explain it in english!

is it possible, that my tuner tunes wrong? because i really tuned the guitar before the video and after you wrote that i tuned it again and there wasnt much to do, because the guitar was almost in tune and i have played a time after making the video.

or maybe it only sounds out of tune because i bend the strings sometimes a little bit without purpose...
