Very nice take with some timing issues but overall very good. I like the guitar a lot! What model is that?

Magnus we continue with your 2nd assignment for January. This assignment is sort of like an essay or written theory behind your current level of knowledge. This will help me totally understand where you at right now. I will give you couple of topics from which you can choose one (or more if you want to!) and write me as many things as possible about it. The deadline for this assignment is 17th of January. Here are the topics for your 2nd assignment :

1) Tell me everything you know about major scale. Construction, intervals, harmony and everything else you feel I need to know.
2) Tell me everything you know about cadences in major scale and its modes. Use C major scale for explanations.
3) Tell me everything you know about major scale modes?
4) Tell me everything you know about modal harmony?
5) Tell me everything you know about pentatonic scales?
6) Tell me everything you know about chord tone and tension relationship with harmony ?
7) Tell me everything you know about natural/harmonic/melodic minor scale harmony?
8) Tell me everything you know about natural/harmonic/melodic minor modes and harmony?

Remember, pick one (or more if you can do it by deadline) and write me as much as possible on given subject. I want to read and understand how you approach and understand given material.
Deadline for this assignment is 3 days from now, 17th of January. Let me know if you have any questions!

Sorry for the late answer.
I`ve had some unfortunate problems with my paypal account and paying for my subscription. I have no idea what went wrong since I`ve always had the money, but the failed payments lead to my gmc-account being frozen. Because of the stress around that, I have not had the time to write the short-essay for the deadline. Today the payment finally went through, so I will write it immediately after school tomorrow and give to you smile.gif

I am far beyond the deadline now, due to my mentioned GMC – access problems and personal things, so I`m writing this in a hurry, meaning I might forget some minor things. The written theory is a combination of task 1 and 3. I probably know more than this, but like I said: Written in a hurry wink.gif
Major Scale

Major scale, also known as the Ionian mode, is built up with the follow intervals:
W = whole tone, H = Half tone  WWHWWWH. C major scale is the only major scale without any flat or sharp notes. The notes are, following the intervals I mentioned: C D E F G A H
The corresponding modes to C major scale would be:
C Ionian – C D E F G A H. The triad consists of C, E and G
D dorian – D E F G A H C – flat 3. And 7. The triad consists D, F and A
E Phrygian – E F G A H C – flat 2, 3,6 and 7. The triad consists of E, G and H
F Lydian – F G A H C D E – Sharp 4. The triad consists of F, A and C
G mixolydian – flat 7. The triad consists of G, H and D
A Aeolian (A minor) – Flat 3, 6. And 7. The triad consists of A, C and E
H Locrian – Flat 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. The triad consists of a H, D and F

If you want to harmonize a line in for instance C major scale, you must decide for which tone you want to harmonize it in. Let`s you want to harmonize a c-major riff in thirds. The riff consists of these notes:
C D E F G F E D C D E F G F E D
Then you must pick the same scale intervals in E phrygian as in C major. So the harmonization riff will in thirds be:
E F G A H A G F E F G A H A G F

Hope that wasnt TOO bad tongue.gif

Magnus here are your remaining assignments for January.

3rd assignment :

- Read Superimposing with Minor Pentatonics post HERE
- After reading the whole thing with related link posts, think about choosing one chord and one approach you will use for recording!

4th assignment :

- After you have chosen your approach, record a backing track with that chord and on top of that record yourself soloing with 1 or all 3 minor pentatonics corresponding with that mode!

Let me give you an example here. Lets say that you have chosen A minor as your chord. Now you also chose A minor to be treated as II (Dorian sounding). In that case you should play minor pentatonics from G major scale ( A , B and E minor pentatonics) over A min chord in the background. 4th assignment asks you only to pick 1 but it also allows you to use all 3 pentatonics if you want to.
Backing track doesn't have to be anything fancy for this purpose. Just guitar playing the chord will do, if you want to add bass and drums to that to make it sound tighter go ahead!

Deadline for these assignments is 31st of January! Let me know if you have any questions !

It should be lots of fun yes!
It is exactly what I talked about in some previous chat sessions. I want to see what you guys can do with this material, I will be more than happy to go over it in some future chat sessions as well. I will schedule one for tonight around 23:30pm Serbian time zone, see if you can make it!

Sorry about late delivery, though I`m barely within deadline. Won`t make any excuses though, I just gotta pull myself together.

I`ve read your post on super-imposing several times, and mostly understood the "theory" behind it on the video chat for some weeks ago.
But when I sat down today and tried to make it sound good... I just didn`t feel it. I took root in E aeolian, so If I`m not mistaken, the minor pentatonics should be: A H E.
For me, only the E minor pentatonic sounded good, A and H didn`t sound nice to me at all over the Em7 chord on the backing. So the take is not satisfying for me, but it was the best I could do tonight sad.gif
I hope I`ll be able to practise more the next weeks

You got all the theory right. I heard the take it sounds mostly like it was played with E minor pentatonic. Idea was to use something else rather than the obvious choice. Try to do B minor or as you say H minor pentatonic. It should sound much smoother than A minor, trust me.
I will lock this thread now since you completed your assignments for January but I want you to keep working on this more in future!
