Does anybody have any tips on playing the second part of the intro for Dani California?

By that I mean the 0:37 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE3dUUj4_4Q

Its basically the only trouble I'm having with the song right now.

I can play the part by hitting individual notes, but it doesn't sound as full as when john plays it. Should I be playing it the Hendrix way with the thumb over?

Any bit of info helps!

hey man, i love John!, and from my experience trying to play some red hots, the key is the roght hand, you gotta strum all the strings and mute them with your left hand, that will give you the FULL sound smile.gif

That's right.... I ove playing that riff it sound great. You mute the unwanted strings with your left hand and you strum a bunch of strings with the right hand....

Hmm, ok. My problem is that I'm gripping the neck like I would a bar chord. IE my fingers are perpendicular to the strings. So I should be using my thumb to cover the bottom two strings, and angling my fingers to cover the rest, right?

I feel like I need to be shown how to do it. I learn best by example since I'm a visual learner.

I'll keep at it though!

totally, do not use a bar chord position, think that ur are "soloing" in that part, you have to mute as you can the other strings wink.gif

You don't use a bar position... I mute the low E and A strings with my thumb and mute the other strings with my finger. Instead of playin with round fingertips put your finger so they touch the other strings (without making them ring)

Thanks for the tips.

I think it would make for a wicked lesson to put up on the site.

But anyway, just to make sure I'm not making this harder on myself, does this seem right?

E--------------------------------------------------------------------|
B-------------------------------------------6h8p6----------5h6p5-----|
G----------5h7p5-------------4h5p4-----------------7------x-5-----5--|
D--7--x-x--------7----x-5--x-------5------------------7--x-----------|
A-------------------------------------3/5----------------------------|
E--------------------------------------------------------------------|

but in the youtube video, it sounds more like:

E----------------------------------------------------------------------|
B---------------------------------------------6h8p6----------5h6p5-----|
G----------5h7p5-------------4h5p4-----------------7---------5-----5---|
D--7-7-x---------7----5-5-x--------5------------------7-7-x------------|
A-------------------------------------3/5-5-x--------------------------|
E----------------------------------------------------------------------|

Its the 6h8p6 part that I can't do without the barre position when using my pinky for the hammer-on.

I think I just need to slow this down and work it with a metronome to get the string muting down. But I need to make sure I'm doing it with proper technique.

Maybe I should record a quick clip of how I play it to get some corrections?

go right ahead my bro, record a funky video and i can help smile.gif
btw i had some troubles with that song too, and in fact with that part, is not as easy as it looks tongue.gif

just be aggressive, like mr frusciante.

i would make this song as a lesson, but, the solo is too crazy, special the quick wah part, so the tab would look like:

E----------------------------------------------------------------------|
B----------whatever----whatever wah wah---------------------|
G---------------------------------------------------------------------|
D-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
A-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
E----------------------------------------------------------------------|

super hard to explain, even he says that was too quick (and sloopy) to be doubled biggrin.gif

Probably sounds so cool because it was too quick and sloppy and over wah'd tongue.gif haha, with a good amount of distortion, it just sounds like a blur wink.gif

don't worry too much about it, john always improvises live, and rarely playes same every time. just try to play it as you can, using the skank technique (muting technique, where all the strings are strummed, but only one is heard). there is a lesson here on that technique on gmc, try to find it, it will be much easier to play this bit with that lesson.
