Bad Habits, Biting Nails.

Since I was a kid I always bit my nails to the point where it hurts. Once I picked up the guitar this habit really became a problem as playing started to hurt. A year later, I still bite my nails, despite trying to quit. Has anyone else had this issue, or something similar that prevented you from playing?

I don't see how anyone can bite their nails tongue.gif I mean, I've even tried before, just to see what it was like to be a habitual nail-biter but it seemed so awkward and weird, plus I was like, hmm, I better wash my hands before I do this biggrin.gif

My problem is that I really don't realize I'm doing it, so by the time I do realize it, I've already bitten my nail quite a bit, and by then I'm screwed biggrin.gif.

Try putting nail polish on, so when you start chewing the taste will wake you up perhaps... I don't know I have never worn nail polish. I can only assume you will taste it, worth a try. Maybe a nice pink?? or even just clear polish. blink.gif

I can't think of anything else, good luck smile.gif

I've tried nail polish remover, as it's got quite a bit of alcohol in it. Turns out my sense of taste isn't doing so well, hehe.

If I'm not wrong theres a special kind of nail polish that taste extrememly bad, esclusively made for nail biters to stop. Check the pharmacy.

Haha, well I would like to think so.

I have no problem biting my nails on my fretting hand, but my picking hand. Well I have been trying to grow them for a while to play on my acoustic but not happening. It shouldn't be a hard thing to quit, as Mr. Nike said "just do it"

Have a look for the closest Nail-biters Anonymous meeting in your area. You should be able to get some useful info from them.

Hope you get things sorted Ayen.

Regards,
Hemlok

well Ayen

i've got the same problem, before i notice it i've already started. but i am trying to stop and up till now its working for me. i'm not using stuff to help me notice. but... well i don't know.. i just don't do it anymore cause it irritated me when i was playing the guitar. but it was hard to stop cause it had become a natural habbit. so good luck with stopping. it feels a lot better when you have normal nales when playing the guitar.

On the bright side, you don't do both - first pick your nose, then bite your nails laugh.gif

i had your same problem. When i was a kid i used to bite them all the time. And after some time, i was starting to get holes on my nails, like if they were pushed down, i dont know if you understand that. But once i saw that...i stopped, and never bite them again. never.
