Hi everyone my name is Stefano (Stef) from the UK

I used to be a member of this website around 2 years ago (as staticstef) I stopped playing guitar as much because my studies got the better of me. I have come back now to take everything much more seriously. Im at a fairly intermediate level, I have been playing for around 4 1/2 years but around 2 of those years I only played guitar around 1 day per week.

I am now in a band called the transmission we play brit rock and I am the lead guitarist who brings some quite fast paced solos and lead guitar to the band. I am fairly good at playing fast using pull offs and hammer ons but a bit weaker at playing fast using alternate picking (so this will be my primary focus). I can do some simple sweeps but really want to get myself to a level where I can play very complicated sweeps so any help in getting me started here would be great (there are so many videos I get sidetracked quite easily )

To simplify things I want to be at a level where I can play Kristofer Dahl's Noctornal vision final part of the solo with ease I can play everything else but not that part The reason I bring that specific video into the equation is because I remember joining GMC after seeing that video on Ultimate-guitar.com a few years ago and that was my main goal back the; however like I said studies got the better of me. Don't get me wrong I am not here just for that one song but that is the speed I am looking to progress to

My main inspiration comes from Iron maiden, led zeppelin, pink floyd, whitesnake, Dio and pretty much every other rock/metal band from the 70's/80's and early 90's. I also like modern metal bands like killswitch engage, A7X, Disturbed etc

I currently own a standard American Strat (sunburst), Ibanez RGR320EX and a Yamaha electric acoustic. I also have a fender frontman 212R which has a perfect clean channel for me to run my Boss GT-10 through it. I also have the Boss JS-8 which is great for practicing.

I am looking forward to progressing my way through the videos and I am interested in participating in the REC programme and Video Chat.

Anyway this is my introduction . I hope to speak to you all soon through the forum and hopefully I can get to know some of you too

Hey, Stef! Welcome to GMC. /obligatory line

Sweeping in Brit rock, heh? I assume you know the major scale, just take a major arpeggio diagram and 'place' that on your 3 nps major scale, going through each one at a time. Some people find the 5 string sweeps easier than the 3, so give them a shot. I'd practice the sweeping separately on both hands, then playing SLOWLY with a metronome to sync it all together. Once you're done with the basic shapes, you can start linking them together for monstrous arpeggios, how to do this should be clear once you've got the diagram embedded in your head. Good luck!

Haha not so much sweeping in brit rock I tend to just play fast in comparison to what indie bands tend to play I am actually a guy who can sweep over 3 strings but cannot sweep more than 3 and yeah I am very familiar with scales. When playing in my band I only have like 3 songs with set solos. The other songs I make it up on the spot by playing in the scales . Thanks for your advice though and nice meeting you

Hi Stef - awesome to have you back and fantastic to hear I have been able to inspire you!

My advice would be to pick any of those sweep picking lessons, doesn't matter which one - as long as it inspires you practice as much as possible! Of course one that matches your current skills level is more likely to have that effect.

Hey Todd is it just saturday you do the video chat? I work on saturdays until 10pm. Can you join in late? And the RG is a great guitar the floyd rose however makes my life hell when changing strings I wait a good 3 months before getting the courage to change strings on it

Welcome to the site ! Some great influences there On a side note, although I'm a metal guy my first ever band was an indie band

As Kris said, it's important to pick a lesson that inspires you so you'll keep wanting to go back to it again and again

Also, you'll definitely have to check out the video chats, you can drop by any time in any of them

Hi Ben thanks for your welcome Its great to hear you were in an indie band too The main reason I joined was beause I liked their music they had some great ideas and I wanted to contribute to their band with my different background. Plus I never played in a band before and the thought made me really nervous and indie music is pretty easy to play so though it was a great place to start.

I love playing live now its a great feeling

I think im going to try out all the video chats if I can make them at first i thought you needed a webcam to partake but Ivan informed me that I didn't I think I will be participating in the 3pm (UK time) video chat today
