Now that I think of it, I didn't really answer the question. I like guitar a bit messed up. I like the old blues players with cheap, nasty guitars. I like guys that make a mess with them like Ministry and Nirvana. Neil Young's Weld album just rocked my world. And Dick Dale.

Old, dirty, crappy and REAL! Thats the way its supposed to be! (Heh, not all genres of course smile.gif)

I have been influenced by different musicians but I could say that steve vai influenced me to play better.
he said this:

"If you want to be a virtuoso then you have to set your sights above me. You have to go beyond what I'm doing. And that's for you to figure out. Because if you can do that, then I'm going to be trying to go beyond you." STEVE VAI

I saw this video, and I wanted to be able to do what Kurikinton fox does.
Not to mention I'm a video game nerd, so that made this video that much more amazing for me.
Kurikinton FOX

He has some pretty good original songs posted up on youtube as well.
Edit: Hmm wrong forum, oops, I'm new sad.gif

I guess the first one was George Harrison from the Beatles (my first so called Rock & Roll experience), Then Jimmy page, Hendrix, Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May, Joe Perry.

I first started playing when I was a kid (maybe 14) I gave it up because I didn't want to ask my parents for a new guitar (the one I had was a basic store bought one and i out grew it very quickly). After that I always wanted to play, every time i would hear a good solo on the radio, cd etc.. I wanted to be the one playng it. Finally this past fathers day at the age of 47 I decided I'm going to learn the guitar before I die, lol and the rest is history.

I now know 7 chords and a few basic beginner songs like Minuet in G, Star Spangled banner and a couple of others, lol I can also read and understand the music theory part of it as I'm taught both of them together. I practice the scales every day and am working on getting good them and Barre Chords right now.

Not to sound corny or anything, but this site did(inspire me to play BETTER).

Before I had come across this site I was just fooling around picking up bad habits and not getting any better.

Once I found this site, I've become more disciplined and have gotten rid of a couple of my worst habits. I still don't play as much as I would like(2 year old daughter, wife in nursing school, etc), but I have noticed a quite large increase in the quality of my play since finding this site a few months ago.

EDIT: I first started playing/took lessons when I was in the 9th grade(I'm 35yo now). My dad asked me if I wanted to play guitar because I was always playing air guitar along with songs. I said yes, he bought me a guitar/amp and I took lessons for about 3-4 months. I quit practicing and didn't pick up a guitar again until I was a freshman in college. My roommate and the guy across the hall played guitar. I bought one for about $50 at a flea market type place and began fooling around again. I really didn't start to improve until I was a senior because I just didn't put in the time.

So, to make a long story short, those bands I was playing air guitar along with were AC/DC, Ozzy and Iron Maiden. From there I was turned onto Metallica and Slayer.

To be honest- i wanted to get pull some babes! Guitarists seemed to be able to attract attention and i decided that at 15 it was time i started to learn. Maybe the wrong reason to start but it's opened up a different world for me. At the moment i'm studying songs/licks/instructional videos by John Petrucci / Paul Gilbert / Satriani / Alexi Laiho and i'm completly absorbed. Ofcourse the GMC has inspired me more- but my favourite part of the entire site has to be Andrew's theory forum section- transformed me.

I didn't originally choose to play guitar because of a certain player. It was more because of it's versatility, just all of the amazing things you can do with a guitar. After that, discovering new bands and new styles of playing increased my interest in guitar, by revealing to me what I could do if I learned how to play and I practiced enough. Everytime I discovered a new style of music that I enjoyed, it opened up new opportunities.

Buckethead and Randy Rhoads are two players that make me never want to stop practising. I can look at most other guitarists and think things like "oh hey this guy is good" but the aforementioned two really stand out for me due to their beautiful beautiful songwriting and flawless execution.
