Thats a problem with older style tremelos like the Fender - locking tremeloes such as the Floyd Rose were designed to stop guitars going out of tune with extensive whammying.

With some effort you can get your fender style whammy to stay in tune a little better, there is lots of stuff out there about lubricating the nut and so forth, I just bought a Jem instead smile.gif

Basically it goes out of tune because when you return the whammy bar back down, the strings are under different tension, causing a slight drop or a great drop in the note.

With a floating bridge, the strings are returned to the same tension more often (with a good bridge, like 99% of the time) because of the balance between string tension and the bridge springs, basically the force of strings pulling the bridge forward, and the force of the bridge springs pulling it backward.

All you have to do is attach your strings properly, no problem. that has been said many times and in many places, by people using the fender tremolo, such as Yngwie, and I think that is a pretty solid source I think. People just either don't take the time, or don't learn how to attach strings.

Not to start tremolo wars, just don't be saying the fender won't play in tune, that is not correct.

Well, if people like Yngwie can get away with abusing it, im sure there has got to be some kind of tricks, like putting a piece of wood underneath your nridge so it always goes to teh same spot.

There are some bridges that stay in tune almost certainly and those are the Double-Locking Floyd Roses. They lock up on the nut and the bridge. The only downside is it takes forever to change strings. Also its not all that easy to install. Plus there expensive but you get what you pay for.

imho, wrong. Read the fender forum, this is discussed at length by people who have been playing strats for decades with that tremolo (unmodified), and who stay in tune.

Agree with this totally.
Many people have problems with attaching string, without knowing indeed.
Wrong attach leads to detune each time when you use whammy bar.
There must be some tip how to do it properly, try google it a bit...

I always tend to think that Yngwie is stating the obvious - but that's just because I think attaching the strings properly is part and parcel of learning how to use the guitar technically properly. Some main pointers - make sure the strings are not binding at bridge or nut; lubricate the nut if necessary; lock the string properly at the head post and don't over wrap (only needs a couple of turns if you lock it properly); stretch the strings properly; clean and change them regularly. Do these and as fkalich and Muris have said a fender trem can and will stay in tune. Don't do these and a Floyd won't stay in tune.

Cheers,
Tony

I agree with all that has been said, but I will say that in my experience all things being equal, a locking tremelo is a lot easier to keep in tune, not a surprise since they were designed for it.

It's not that hard. The first time it certainly takes long. You just need to get use to it.
