Hey GMCers!

So here's the deal, Like many of you I have learned many songs over the years. But there are some songs which are better ingrained into my memory. there are some tunes that I have learned many years ago that I have no problem at all recalling how to play even if I havent played them in a long time , then there are other songs that I have learned even recently that I have trouble remembering without going back to the song and basically re-learning, especially if I dont play them often. So I was looking for a little feedback on this , Do any of you have this problem? Could it be something I did or did not do while learning these songs in the first place? Or is it simply a matter of how much I played the song after learning it? Maybe you have some tips on something to incorporate into the learning process that will help me remember a song better after I have learned it.
If there is something I did in the process of learning these songs which I can remember easily that I didnt do while learning the songs I have trouble remembering. I havent been able to pinpoint what that might be. Any Ideas?

Thanks Rich.......

I usually have the same problem smile.gif well, I usually learn songs and after the performance, the ones which I don't play often enough, disappear from my system. It's only natural for the unused info to disappear I guess. If you have a tremendously good ear, you'll figure them out faster than usual, but if you don't shuffle through them from time to time, you have all the chances to forget, so don't worry smile.gif

Well, it goes similar for me to guys, some songs come and go if not played, and some stick around if I play them often. I've heard stories of people that have excellent musical memory, and can recall lots of different pieces, but don't count me there, I forget often biggrin.gif

I have the same problem and that's the memory! Yet, it is hard to recall something that is not played for years cool.gif !
Imagine this: when I had the most gigs, almost every night, I had to learn about 30-50 songs a month ! X 12 months = about 500 songs on a year ! X 10 years = 5000 fully songs, man, every rhythm and lead part, each intro, tonality, or anything else. Also I was playing with a 4 bands in a same time, 4 different genre, a bunch of different people, characters, ..... and who can stay a normal there for all these years !!! laugh.gif

Most songs I learned I have forgotten. There are some exceptions, songs I played so much I couldn't even try to forget them. Iron Maiden's Powerslave, Arch Enemy's Wages Of Sin, and Metallica's Master Of Puppets are all albums I can still remember very well.

Theres about another 100 songs, that I can't even remember how to begin laugh.gif

It's true about cover gigs. I also did some, and they are very memory-intensive. Learn songs fast - play them good. Fortunately, if there are minor mistakes, band can cover you, so the golden rule applies: if you don't know the chords - just scratch laugh.gif cool.gif

biggrin.gif you know, I received a phone call a few weeks ago from a cove rband asking me to join for a few gigs - they specifically asked me NOT to play the songs like the originals, so I guess there are all sorts of exceptions which apply to this idea. Although it would've been an interesting experiment, I politely refused due to risking of getting pretty tangled up with the schedule.
