For fingerstyle I would say Flea tone :

I like his strong attack and punchy sound.

For the slap sound I would say Marcus Miller has the coolest tone but I also like the warm slap sound that Victor Wooten has and also the one by David Dyson :

All in all - I like my sound to be open and bright, with strong bottom end and punch. A cross between cool slap bass tone and cool fingerstyle tone I guess.

I always liked the bass tone Skid Row had. Turns out the bass player was the one who wrote most of the songs, which would explain the prominence of the bass tones in the mix.

The richness and definition of tone , these are for me the most important characteristics of a good bass sound !

Such as?

I"ve always liked Billy Sheehan's tone as he usually layers a bit of growl on top.
